To Cup or Not to Cup, That is the Question

A number of people have complained that they are not getting the bra cups with every tank they order from the GEC. This was brought up on the Lululemon Facebook site today and this is the response that was posted (and in agreement with what reader Momof5 was told when she called to get more bra cups):

In the interest of being more environmentally friendly, we are moving away from including cups with every tank/bra order because we've found so many are being thrown out. Don't forget that the cups are interchangeable! They'll fit in all your bras and tanks that accommodate removeable cups.

I think this answer is a bit specious. Sure you can reuse the cups but if you are just building up a lululemon wardrobe and you work out every day, that means you'll have to hand wash the cups that night to be able to wear a tank with cups the next day. Addionally, the cups are not nearly as durable as the tanks. After a while the edges get ratty and they get wrinkles so I think it's good to have spares to keep on hand.

I'd like to take a mini poll and ask you guys:
Do you throw away your bra cup cookies?

I haven't thrown away a single pair yet and I think I have bought something like forty or fifty tanks that came with the cups. I do use the cups when I wear my tanks out of the house, especially with the Luxtreme tanks. I am saving them because after a while the cups get wrinkled (I don't hand wash them) and some of the edges are getting tattered so I know I will end up throwing some away because of wear and tear. Most of the time I don't ask for cups when I buy a tank in the store because I have so many at home.

I think the best solution is to add a check box to the order to ask people whether they want the cups. However, I think with cups should be the default option on all the luxtreme and white tanks. The material is so thin it shows everything.

nope, don't ever use them. They make a lot of women's chests look weird imo. Plus, I'm at the gym, why the heck do I care how big my boobs look? (and it's one extra-thick-layer of fabric, not what I want when I'm sweating like crazy).

(When I bought a bra that came with them, the sales girl told me to make sure to take the cups out when washing my tank so they don't get mangled)

I also don't think it's something you need to wash after every use. I agree with lulu a bit on this one..it seems wasteful to have dozens of cups...

I haven't thrown mine away either except for the one cup that got drenched in bath oil & the edges peeled away!! So you're absolutely correct when you wrote the tops are more durable than the cups :) Everytime I purchase a lulu item (store or online). I will ask them for cups. We're paying $52+ for at least a top. It should be included or at least have the option. How much extra could those cups cost them? Do they really care about the environment? and... what's the pt buying lulu if our girls are going to show up ?

I would love to know how they came to the conclusion that the cups are being thrown away...

I always wear the cups, doesn't matter what the tank is made of. Never throw them away. However I have a few that need to be thrown away because they are coming apart. They definitely do not last as long as the tank.

I wish they would get a grip on this...52.00 for a tank or 42.00 for a flow y, I want the cups. Send them, I paid for them, shouldn't have to call for them and perhaps meet resistance ala momof5. Anyway, why should Lulu care what I do with them?? I'll say it again, they should be more concerned with the environmental impact of additional shipping.

On a side note...very few tanks have them in at the store. You have to ask for them. New Lululemon customers probably don't know to ask. For awhile they would search the other tanks to find some cups. One day I asked why they didn't have a pile of them stashed somewhere...few weeks later, viola, they are stored in a drawer in the dressing room.

I have never thrown a single good cup away. I have thrown out a bunch of wrinkly ones which occurred because I didn't not have enough cups to last the week ecause online orders don't include them. It infuriates me to receive a new tnk from the website that does not include cups, I like them in all of my tanks....

So annoying.

I only have once lulu tank at the moment, the Run: Energy SL (which, as far as I know, doesn't hold cups). If I were to order a tank online, and they didn't send me the cups with them, I would end up being 'cupless', as I don't have a stash at home. I agree, there should be an option to "opt out" when you place your online order.

LuluAddict, you are not the only one who finds the line "we've found so many are being thrown out" to be a little bit suspicious!

I have about 20 Lulu tanks with built-in bras, and about 8 sets of cups. I have never thrown any bra cups out, and sometimes wish I had more, because I only do laundry every three weeks or so. I wash only my own clothes, so I want to make sure I have a large enough load to justify the water and energy usage. The cups get soaked to the core when I do hot yoga, bar method, or any cardio dance class, so wearing them more than once before washing is often out of the question.

I think of the cups as being more for modesty than for augmentation. I appreciate womens' bodies as much as the next person; at the same time, I'd really prefer not to see anybody nipping out if it can be easily avoided with the simple addition of some little cupcakes.

A friend of mine went to Lulu for the first time (on my recommendation) and got a Power Y tank. She didn't know that she could get cups with the tank, and nobody offered them to her, so after I saw her tank and told her about the cups, she had to make another trip back to get some. I felt bad, because that is not an example of the awesome customer service that I have always raved about to her.

To make a long story short, I agree that it would be nice to have the option to either request or decline bra cups on the Lulu website.

I have never received cups with any of my tanks. 3 All Sport bras purchased - no cups. I finally asked for a pair when I bought a Push tank (luxtreme shows everything!!) as this top would be indecent for me to wear w/o the cups. I don't wash them after every use. I think there should be a box to check whether you want them or not online, and it should be easier to ask/receive a pair in the store.

I don't tend to buy Lulu tops with built in bras (I prefer layering a top over my own bra and don't like to or need to double up), but the few times I have purchased the bra tanks I have removed the cups. I never wear them - I don't like the extra layer and they make my small breasts look lumpy and weird. But I haven't thrown the cups out either ... I keep them around just in case I change my mind about them.

I like that Lulu is now giving online shoppers the choice to opt out of the bag (the last thing I need is another Lulu bag!). I agree that it would be super easy to do the same with the cups - it seems an easy fix that would make everyone happy, cup-lovers and cup-haters alike.

Always use mine.

I just started buying Lulu tanks in January and so far have acquired alot! I want cups for each of my tanks with a built in bra. I also want cups for my Flow Y's. I have bought all my tanks in the store and sometimes have to ask for them. I did once order a loot flow y and was shocked when it did come with cups. If ordering online there should be a box if you want them or not. For $52 a tank they should automatically give them to you. That is one of the features I love the best about the tanks and bras is being able to put in the cups. I've been wearing my modern racerbacks casually with my flow y's and I use the cups. Last week I was at the beach and it was cool & breezy. I was so glad to have them so I wasn't flashing everyone.

I have never thrown away my cups. I love them, and I wished Lululemon would offer the option for them when I place my orders online. It seems to me they are cost cutting a lot lately..besides not including the removable cups, they are putting non-elastic zipper pulls on their jackets, logos on the hoods that are not 'wooly' (they are now flat and smooth)...I used to work in production/clothing manufacturing and these are the telltale signs of cost trimming.

I think it is an absolutely insane idea to say that they do not include them because of the environment -- when i did call the GEC -- they fedex'ed a pair IN A BOX-- with packing tape -- HELLO-- way worse for the environment then just sending them with my $52 tank .

As far as not washing after every use --EWWW!! Maybe if you are wearing them for casual wear -- but I wear mine to the gym and I sweat -- Mine need to be washed -- besides -- since i do sweat -- it would be obscene for me to wear the tanks without the cups as I am not in to having my nipples visible in my tops!

The cups are one of the reasons I first fell in love with LULULEMON-the attention to detail and extra features make their clothes stand out from the competition- I hate having to wear a separate bra under my tanks -- especially in the summer when it is hot -- and I shouldn't have to call EVERYTIME I order a tank online or through the GEC

SO GIVE ME MY DAMN CUPS!!! thats what the check box should read!!!!

I generally don't use cups but do occasionally (depends on the tank.) However, I do save my stash of them so they are handy when needed and only toss when they get wrinkly. I think the default should be that they are sent out with every tank/bra that has cup pockets and you have the ability to opt out if desired. The environmental excuse is laughable.

As a yoga/pilates teacher, I always wear the cups. I am small chested but HATE to nip out in front of my classes. I have even been known to use my little lulu cutlets inside another brand top! I say...we pay for 'em, we should get 'em!

I ALWAYS use the cups. They are one of the reasons I love the lululemon tanks! I wrote the other day in response to your comments about the website and said that I have had to ask for them several times from the GEC. They sent them each time, but I imagine that has to cost more than simply including them! I agree that there should be an opt out check box for people who don't want them, but they should be a default inclusion with tanks that have space for them.

I love the cups & wear them with many tanks & bras.....some of the crb tanks are too light in color.....don't like to be peeking out at the gym.....I FULLY AGREE, it should be an option online, just like the bags, they should offer them in the store as well. I have all mine, wash them with the tanks, & it is one reason I started buying Lulu tops/bras.....the cups!!! Hope they keep them..

I always use them. It disappoints me when I do not receive them with bras or tops with built in bras. When that happens I always make a point of asking for more cups at the store.

M said...

I use them and hate having to remove them from one tank in order to put them in another tank. It's a hassle, plain and simple. For the price we pay, cups should be included. Or, like you said, make it an option when checking out.

So, question...do you leave them in the bra and/or tank when you wash? Or remove them and throw them in with other laundry? Hand washing seems like it would take forever and be veeerry tedious!

My sister has just started buying Power Ys for running. She has gone from a Lulu size 8 to a 4 and totally lost her chest. I think her 11 year old daughter has a bigger chest than her now. She uses the cups to give her a little more bust and to cover the nips.

I don't re-use cups after a workout. My workouts are too sweaty.

I don't use the cups for bigger boobs - mine are big enough - but they help control the jiggle and give coverage so I'm not nipping out. I bought the bubbilicious pink Push UR Limits and there is no way I'd wear that without the cups. It's just too light colored.

I agree, the default should be with cups and with an option to opt out.

It's weird they are starting to go cupless now. Zohba is just starting to put them into their tops.

@M - RE: cup care - this question was asked on the Lululemon facebook page. You are supposed to remove them and hand wash them so they won't get wrinkled. I remove the cups and then throw them loose in the wash with the rest of my lululemon. However, I wash my lululemon stuff on the hand wash cycle of my front loader machine so I think it's pretty gentle on them. Sometimes I'll put the cups in a mesh bag.

I was just having this thought yesterday when I was in the lulu store. I had bought about 6 scoop bras and a scoop tank from the Beverly Hills store (love the design and specifically buy the scoops for the cup coverage) and none of the items had the cups in them. When I asked if they could give me the cups they would only give me 2 pairs and asked to interchange them. As a person who buys the product because of the cups and am obviously buying many because I work out tons and don't get to wash that often I was really upset I couldn't get more, so I just went to another store and had them give me the rest.

Funny -- I sent an email to GEC regarding missing cups and this is what they sent back

Thank you for contacting us about the bra cups. In order stay environmentally friendly, we have refrained from including cups in our tanks. We also encourage our guests to stay eco-friendly by re-using the cups that they have. However, if you still require the cups please visit our local store as they will have them available as well.

WTF!!! If I had a local store - I wouldn't be ordering online!!! And please -- if they wanted to be so enviro friendly -- i can think of a lot more ways than cheating return customers out of cups!!!

SO ANNOYED!!!!! What a crappy customer service!!!

I can't wear a shirt without them! I was really upset when I bought my 50 Reps Bra and got home to realize there were no cups. I went back to the store to ask for a set. I prefer when they were always included.

Also, I find it extremely annoying to take the cups out and put them in again. They never go in just right and I have to play with it. I'd rather NOT have to do that every single time, and I don't want to have to worry that I forgot to put on my cups!

Lululemon's response isn't a good one since many people are first time customers and don't have a set. With the cost of these shirts, the cups should be included (unless you choose to opt out).

LuluAddict said...

@ Laura B - So you were buying a few hundred $ worth of stuff - and they only gave you two pairs of cups? WTF?!?!? Where did you end up going instead? I would make that my main store. I wouldn't go back to the BH store. I've found the workers in that store the unfriendliest and much prefer Santa Monica, Glendale, or Passadena.

I encourage you to complain on Lululemon's Facebook page because that seems to be the only way to get their attention - you have to make a public stink.

I ALWAYS use my cups. The cups are one of the biggest reasons I love Lulu bras/tanks. Some of us small-chested gals need a little padding to even out the figure. Just as I don't wear bathing suits without cups, I don't wear workout tanks without cups. I think it should be a choice in all online orders. Every tank I order online never has the cups. Every tank I buy in store, I ask for and receive cups.

I don't agree the cups can be reused without washing. I sweat like crazy when I work out and those cups are just as wet with sweat as the rest of my tank after I work out. If I need to wash the tank, I need to wash the cups. And yes, the cups are not very sturdy. So I definitely need one pair for each tank/bra. Give us the choice so we can decide whether we want the cups or not.

momof5 - I can't believe they told you to go to a store to get the cups!

I never use them! I used to use them in one of my tanks but I hated when I washed them that they would come out and then I would have to put them back in. Plus I have no boobs so I don't feel like I need them.

I am one of the new customers some of you have referred to. I was given a power y tank as a gift and it came with cups. I decided to exchange it for a scoop neck (that style was more flattering on me) and there were no cups. I just thought that was the way it was supposed to be. Then I read the "why we made this" tag and it mentioned how it has pockets in the top for the cups. It got me thinking "I want the cups!". I guess I need to go back to the store now and ask for some.

Thank you for posting this topic!

I just find that the cups are a weird shape-they look absolutely ridiculous on me...

I almost always use the cups, and more for camo, not padding. This recent change of not including them drives me NUTS!! Anytime I put one on that doesn't have them, (provided I'm not in a rush and notice), then I have to dig through my drawers feeling for a tank that has the cups and take them out, put the cups in the one I'm wearing, etc. SOo annoying!

In the general spirit of Lulu, their tanks seem to last forever, but the cups definitely do not!

I say it should definitely be something that's included by default that you can opt out of.

How much do you want to bet - they're testing things and taking baby steps to making the cups an "optional" item that you have to pay extra for?!?!!! Wouldn't surprise me one bit if that's where they're going with this...

Pattybea said...

I have thought this for awhile...that this is a test before charging for them. At my store the only things with cups in them while hanging on the rack are some power Y tanks and the flow Y bras. Other than that nothing else has cups.

One day I asked why and they told me that the company doesn't send them enough for every tank--huh??

LuluAddict said...

I seem to remember the stores having bags of xtra cups they would sell. I thought it was $8 for 2 or 3 pairs or something like that. They were little mesh bags with ribbons on top.

You're right, the only tanks that consistently come with cups are the Power Ys. I wonder why that tank and not the Scoop.

Anonymous said...

Lulu's explanation is ridiculous and far from believable. They waste far more in packing materials for the smallest of items. Thank god they smartened up and asked if we wanted the bags in the online ordering!

The last time I went to my local store and asked for extras cups to buy, they all but pointed and laughed at me. Wanted to strangle the girl! Little snob...

Anyways, I found the same exact cups at my local Joanne Fabrics Store. I'm assuming most other sewing/fabric stores will sell similar cups (silicone kind, fabric kind, etc). They were $3 or $4 USD for a fabric set. Well below $8 for the Lululemon Store kind. Pretty soon, they're going to start charging for hemming...
