Are You a Lulu Hoarder?

I read the best expression on Facebook today, "Lulu Hoarder". I think I might be turning into one. I have something like 75 tops but only wear about a third of them regularly. The rest have been sitting in my closet. I am struggling with getting rid of them. Some of them are like trophies - they were hard to find or coveted items that I finally obtained and now I am loathe to part with them. Others are patterns, prints, colors, or styles I once loved but now have found new loves. How do you all decide when it's time to move on and get rid of your Lululemon? Do you have a rule of thumb - if it's been XX months and I haven't worn this then I will get rid of it? I could certainly use the closet space and boost to my Paypal account.

I have a 12 month limit. If it hasn't gotten worn in 12 months it goes.I just sold some stuff and it is kinda fun to see it go to people who are excited to get it and use it. plus, it totally justifies getting new stuff!

I have a tendency toward Lulu hoarding, but have been working to overcome it. I think I I am going to enact a rule that for every one Lulu item I buy, one older item has to get listed on eBay or the exchange.

I don't have that many tanks as you probably about 15 excluding tees and jackets. I just sold some because I got sick of the colors and I don't wear them much. Like you I will tend to keep items with hard to find prints/styles and I know most likely not many ladies in my gym has. I still have a bunch of stuff NWT bought more than 6 months ago which I will probably sell too. Recently I started running so I tend to go for my CRBs more.

I have a rule that everytime I buy a new piece of clothing, I have to take one piece away (throw away, give away..), that way I do not end up with a tons of clothes I don't wear :) Recently I decided to replace a LOT of my stuff with Lulu stuff... Right now I only own 5 Lulu items (beginner, but already so addicted).. I love tanks, so I have a lot of them, and I wear XS, so they are small, so A LOT of them can fit into my closet... I have a lot of things I have not had on for YEARS, but I plan to change this - getting rid of these and replace them with Lulu.

I'm definitely a hoarder. I am starting to do the "get something, sell something" action, but it's tough when spring is coming and so many of my favorite items are coming out in new colors ;) I made the error of adding up the cost of my entire collection and how much I had paid...yikes! Let's just say I would need another job to continue without selling the old stuff.

I have a tendency toward buying too much clothing (of any kind). Not to the extent of many of the fb lulu fans though. I am happy to say I wear most of my Lulu that I have. Especially the crops/tights. I sold the sunblocker l/s that I really wasn't getting much wear out of. I realized recently that I hadn't worn my older shape up jacket in a long time. I also haven't worn one of my older luon w/shelf bra tanks in some time. I just made a list of all I have (and I'm happy I can remember it all!) and I have about 25 pieces between tights, crops, tanks, long sleeve, zipped hoodies, a bag, and hats.

Back in the fall I started trying the "get rid of something when you buy something new" thing like Makavelina -- and I went on a little Lulu detox in November. I'm happy to say I haven't bought any lulu in the past 2 months. (And surprise! I was able to save more $$ in our down-payment fund for those last 2 months) I was about to buy all these awesome pieces (alpine tights, some of the new pullovers) just because they were warm and comfy and cute, but really didn't *need* them. My running line is very well equipped, and it was getting a little out of hand! Today I stopped for errands near my local lululemon and was very proud of my self for resisting and not setting foot in lulu...even though I kinda wanted to see if they had any ambition pullovers left.

Yes...

However I am not hoarding the new stuff...to me it is just so so...

Now the older prints, another story. I've said it before, they are like works of art...beautiful, creative and different.

One of my latest purchases was a run tech mesh tank-- pale green with lululemon athletica written in subtle white and green stripy block letters on the diagonal. Love...

The hoarding comment on FB touched a nerve because the Lulumum blog just posted about this topic, too. (It's so weird that a brand of clothing inspires this since I am not like this about anything else. I've never been much of a collector.) She said one of the signs of a Lulu Hoarder is that you keep all the Why We Made These tags. I was glad to read I am not the only one who does that. However, part of the reason is that I use them again when I resell the items.

@anon 2:38 pm - My husband recently went into our Quicken files and pulled all the Lululemon related transactions for the past few years. It was a rather larger number.

I love to see my tanks lined up in my cupboard, sometimes I just open my cupboard door and admire them. At the moment, my colors mostly consist of all shades purples. So right now I am trying to mix it up so that I can see rainbow colors in my tanks. I am more careful in buying stuff now. I think long and hard. Unless its those hard to find items like the NLT. I'll just buy all the colors first in fear of losing out and return /sell the ones I think I will not wear that much. I work out about 3 to 5 times a week so I do use my tanks a regularly.

@ pattybea - I can't think of what run tank you are writing about but it sounds beautiful. Do you know the name of the style?

RunningOnCoffee said...

hm... I keep the Why We Made this too! Even though I have now worn all of my lulu items, when I have resold some (i.e. Sunblocker L/S, Plaid speed shorts), I like to include the hang tag as part of proving that it is an authentic item even though the tags have been cut off and it has been worn.

and I think it's best for our marriage that my husband doesn't know the EXACT figures spent on lulu!! He knows it's pricey, he knows some of it was purchased on sale (and some not). It comes out of my "spend this on whatever you want without any questions from the other person" money. When I told him that some things resell for more than purchased price, he said sell it all then! haha but he hasn't complained too much.

Some coveted, hard to find items like the NLT, Flow and Go, Foutte Tank, Batwing Tee and Liberty Tee has just been sitting in my cupboard for ages. I am definitely planning to wearing them one day, but at that time I just had to have it and I love all of them to bits. I dare not calculate how much I have spent on Lulu. And I have sold loads already. I try not too have many of the same styles in different colors and I hardly have the same colors in different styles.

@pattybea and LuluAddict - I don't know if it's the tank pattybea bought, but I definitely remember the print - It was used on the 2-piece shrug tech top - the one that was a silverescent tank that had a separate long sleeve pullover shrug that when worn together looked like a long sleeve top. Super cute style - don't know why Lulu hasn't brought it back.

OOHHH that was me that use the expression !!! I kind feel famous now !!!!! Lots of Lulu Hoarders!!!

@chi Runner - I have a Shrug Top in Anise. It's one of my "trophy" items I refuse to get rid of even though I have only worn it 3x because I bought it when I weighed a little less and am waiting until I fit into it again. That style was so beautiful - it had something like 3 types of fabric and had so much decorative stitching and pleating. I don't think I'll ever sell it even if I never wear it again.

I've only sold a couple of Lulu items when I've had duplicate. I like to consider myself a collector, but I also wear and enjoy every item I own. Possessions are fleeting.

I gotta say -- I get bored easily with clothes -- If I don't wear it - I will sell it -- and that gives me money to get something new -- Unless I totally love something --I even sold all of my deep vs except black because I just wasnt wearing them anymore --I am already getting bored with my cuddle up -- i know its a problem of a different kind!!

I'm sure I'm a hoarder. I have a massive collection. However, I am always teaching or working out or going to or from one of those activities, so I wear lulu pretty much every day. I certainly have bought items just because of the hype but often I'll return those items. I know that if I'm not dying to rip the tags off and wear the new piece the next day that it is a sign (unless the piece isn't "in season" yet such as the liberty t which I have not worn yet but will certainly wear this summer). If I have a bunch of stuff I have not worn in a year I sell it off. But generally the last things I sell off are stuff I have not worn in a year AND was very hard to come by - those items can be hard to part with even if they are not in regular wardrobe rotation. However, eventually I do part with them.

@Chirunner:
Oakbrook has the new winter-weight running pullover in black so the chicago-area IS getting them.

Wow, I see one of my tops that I sold a couple years ago.... bottom row, third from right. I think that is my picture. LOL!!! Great top.

I am not a lulu hoarder. I'm pretty good at parting with stuff I don't need or wear. Selling fuels my buying for sure as Lulu is an expensive habit. I am not a natural collector so maybe that helps. I put away my out of season lulu though so when I get it out again it kind of feels new all over again.

@anon 3:42 pm - The Vitalize tank? I use photos from eBay when I can't find an official Lulu one so there is a good chance it's yours. ;-) I have a Power Point file I put photos of my tanks, jackets, and bottoms in so I can visualize my collection easily (I know, total OCD). I am on the fence about selling this one. I hardly ever wear it but it's so different looking. Argggh.

I'm like a serial dater with the new Lulu stuff...If it has been 3 months and I haven't worn it-off it goes to the Exchange or Ebay. I often get caught-up in the "quest" of acquiring new pieces, but find that they just don't live up to the old school Lulu (although I am just bitching on the surface, as my Lulu stock keeps gaining :-)).

PS If you ever decide to sell your "Wet Rose" tank, can I have first dibs??? ;-).

@ LuluAddict-The tank is Run:Race Tech Mesh or Run:Race Tech II. I think you did review very long ago. Here is a link to some on the site:

http://shop.lululemon.com/Run_Race_Tech_II/pd/np/540/p/1364.html

I think the one I have came out before these prints or was only available in stores or just Canada, etc... I have since bought a couple more. It is a cute and different tank and very lightweight.

A museum might be a good idea... or open a Vintage lulu shop... ;o)

@LuluAddict - I had the shrug tech in Anise too! I loved it and loved the versatility of the style, but finally decided that I wasn't wearing it enough to keep it and sold it on eBay. Baby steps. :)

@Anon 3:21 - Halsted told me they are expecting them on Monday. Can't wait!

My big test is this: Put it in a bag/box in the basement, leave 3 months (or more, if you want). If, during that time, you haven't thought of any of the items, or searched your closet wondering where they are, then you're good to part with it and send it to a home where it will be loved.

If you really regret putting in any of the pieces, then you're not ready to let go!

LuluAddict said...

@ HoundLVR - I am selling the Pow Wet Rose Wrap Tech. I just never wear it. Msg me on FB.

Lulu Addict - I loved the Vitalize Tank. I was kind of sad that I didn't keep one for myself. I'm pretty sure that is my picture. That's my office armoire. Very cute top and I liked that color the best. :)

Anonymous said...

Oh my goodness, the Run: Race Tech II is so cute! Why DON'T they make stuff like that anymore? Now that does not look like a top you'd find elsewhere!

Anonymous said...

The liberty tee is a coveted piece? I hate mine. It is just too non-functional, with all the excess fabric on the sleeves.

Anonymous said...

honestly ... i think you *just know* if it's one of the "top picks" for a two week period or so. If it's not, I sell it. If i like a certain style, I will sell all but ONE of that style. as an example, I am into wunder unders right now. I rarely ever wear my boogie crops anymore (2 yrs ago those were my favorite) but i still like the style, so i sold 4 out of my 5 boogie crops. Same goes for my power y's and all my gather v's and "3 Set" tanks.

I am not a hoarder by any means. If a piece of Lululemon clothing no longer fits or I no longer enjoy the style, I give it to a friend!
That said, a lot of the styles I love are not made often enough, so if I like a style I buy it in every color! Right now I am trying to get my hands on more colors of the hustle tank...because it fits me! I will be sad when they stop making that style :(

i was turning into one... had about 7 or 8 tops then started selling them on ebay! u'll be surprised how much u can get back for them!!! i actually made double the amount for one and at least got back a lil more than half for the others.. so happy :) LOL but that just made me buy another top ...and another :)....now i have more than i started w/ LOL

Each time I want to get a new color tank, I would imagine my old lulu's having a sad look on their face because they will be ignored and won't be used in full potential. I use my older lulu tanks for camping, hikes, and more strenuous activities.

I also remind myself that there are only 7 days a week. I can't possibly be wearing more than that. I currently own 3 power Y tank and I wear them underneath a top everyday. I am considering getting more power y tanks but will wait till I have a favorite color on sale. I am hoping that the rubber ducky color and microstripe ones will be on sale in my size soon.

My wishlist also consist of a scuba hoodie. I know scuba hoodie is an essential for any lulu addict, however, I am waiting to invest in one that says "this is my hoodie". I havent been able to fall in love with the hoodies that is currently available. They are all beautiful, but the one and only has not come by yet.

I'd love to buy off you if it's the right size for me - size 2. I like some of the tops very much. Lemme know and how much are they? I reside in Hong Kong. Hopefully you will ship them here for me! Thanks :)

I have wayyyyy too many lulu everything!!! I couldn't imagine getting rid of anything though as I love everything too much!! And older lulu seems to be more valuable and prized :P

Anonymous said...

I try to avoid this all together, I will only buy one of each Style unless it is something I use a lot of (I have two tanks in the same style, different colour, two different run shirts and hooded shirts, only because I use them so much I have to wear one while one is in the laundry)

Otherwise I put a limit on it, only ONE scuba, One define jacket etc etc. I try to get my solo jacket in a colour not yet in my wardrobe,I will be breaking that rule though, as my only scuba is in a print, and it has no thumb holes, so I will get a solid colour scuba with thumb holes. There are items I don't wear that often in my closet, but I don't have enough to justify getting rid of any of it this way, it also makes me far pickier with my colours, and less of a drain on my bank account.
