Hoodies Made of Gold?

Big news on the boards is that Lululemon is rasising Scuba hoodie prices by $10 to $108 for solid colored Scubas, striped ones will be $128, and the special edition ones will be $148-160. And, get this, some of the hoodies currently in the stores have been repriced - see the photos below for proof - which is utterly ballsy on Lululemon's part. The website has not yet been updated so hurry up and get your hoodies now before they all go up. This is patently ridiculous. I know the hoodies are hugely popular in Canada and I like the two hoodies I have now but I can count on one hand how many people I have spotted wearing them outside of a gym here in Southern California. Good luck with this plan, Lululemon. Since you are now in the same price neighborhood, I think I'll start buying Ever, Arc'teryx, or North Face.

Sillwater Blue Dip Dye Hoodie- was $108

Was $98

Poor tagging on their part to newbies who would not know better. Additional stickers on established tags usually indicate a price mark-down, not a mark-up!

I wont be buying any hoodies at that price. Even if I was a millionaire I wouldn't buy hoodies at that price.

Becky said...

I won't be buying at that price either. I will enjoy the Hoodies I have, but will not be buying any more.

Sad to see the direction lululemon is going in.

Remember this? "Friends are more important than money"

How ridiculous!! No more hoodies for me at that price. Just pure craziness on their part. Oh, and greediness too. :( Very disappointed in Lulu.

Anonymous said...

Wow, guess we'll have to wait for them to show up in Loot...for the old original price.

It doesn't get cold enough here for me to buy more than the one I have, anyway. I liked the style, but not THAT much.

Anonymous said...

A more than 10% price jump is ridiculous! Why is LLL trying to narrow its customer base rather than expand it? I can live without the scubas, it's my least favourite of the jackets, but I love my SFT...although not enough to pay more than the $98 price tag!!

Anonymous said...

this makes me sick. i'm literally laughing out loud at the idea of paying $150 for a LULU sweatshirt. i hope they crash and burn big.

For myslef I can't see buying another scuba, but living in a cold climate in canada where 8-10 months of the year you'd be wearing sweaters I see 10 out of 15-18 people wearing lulu and its usually a scuba when its a hoodie.. So here in canada its likely to work at that price, maybe not the 130+ but the 100-120 sure.. I'd spend that on another savasana wrap (if I could find a cream and vancouver) to make that 4 as I wear those daily here.. I guess they're just seeing where the market is?

@ anon 2:07 pm - The Scuba doesn't work too well here in SoCal for me, anyway. It's too warm in the summer and not warm enough in the winters. I switch to fleece then. I really like the Remix Light - I wear that all the time and it's much softer and not so stiff. I like my two Scubas but I can't really see getting another at the inflated prices unless it's an irresistible print or color. I like the technical stuff a lot because it's functional and pretty but I can very easily live without the casual stuff. My Cabin Long sleeve has started pilling between the layers, my Modern Racer tank is fuzzy looking after a few wears (the cotton one). I do like my It's a Cinch Dress but it's a fairly unusual design for lulu.

This is just Stupid!! That will be all.

I wouldn't buy a Scuba at the old price!

It just seems that they're pricing out a segment of customers and alienating others. Maybe they're targeting a "higher end" customer base? Trying to be the Louis Vuitton of stretchy pants and tops? I'm not sure how this will work out for them. I already have to convince myself that their clothing is worth the splurge at their current prices. As you said in your post - jumping to the next price range puts them in competition with companies that make much better technical wear.

Anonymous said...

Most of my lulu is performance wear for the gym, but I do have one scuba that I quite like, but it's just boring gray. I was hoping for a couple more in colors, but NO WAY for that price. I already had a hard time parting with $98 for one, an increase means I won't even attempt to justify the expense.

Anonymous said...

I feel that if cotton went and they have to raise the price on new ones coming out then I could see it, (I still wouldn't buy it). To raise the price on the ones that were on the shelf now at $98 it just ridiculous. I am so amazed when I see this company do these things, it's like they truly don't value their customers.

I have 12 (!!) scuba/Remix that i have collected for the past few years. I'm done. Won't be buying any more for this price even if i can. For that tag price, I will buy other brands. very sad.

I live in Vancouver and have several Scuba's (both me and my husband). I would still buy at that price. It doesn't bother me. What does bother me is seeing every 2nd girl on the street with the same sweatshirt. Maybe the price increase will stop this.

Anonymous said...

At this new price, you would think it was made out of gold! I am so sad to hear this! I was going to buy a very good friend of mine a Scuba for her birthday and have been saving up for it. But this price increase puts it way out of my budget.

My two $98 dollar scuba hoodies that I own haven't impressed me much; one had fading after 1 wash and the had some pilling....Lulu's prices are going up and their quality is going increasingly downhill. As much as I don't always enjoy their style and cuts, I've never had a quality issue with Nike :)

Anonymous said...

Glad I overbought last year. No more hoodies from Lululemon.

Anonymous said...

I was just wondering....so many people read this blog but only a few made a comment about not buying a scuba at this price...so what bout the rest ? are they going to buy it ??
@anon 7;30- I guess in Canada lululemon can charge that price and people would pay but i doubt if that will happen here in California. As much as we love lululemon, we have other great options that we can turn to.

LuluAddict said...

@ anon 10:01 pm - I agree. There are a lot of great California-based, even LA-based casual wear companies that charge similar prices and offer better style. There are a couple of other yoga brands out of NYC that I have read about and may now give a try: Hyde (www.yogahyde.com) and Creem (www.creemcollection.com). Vancouver has quite a few other active wear companies to choose from, too. One that I really like is Public Myth who I think Fergi wears a lot.

Kate said...

So annoyed with this price increase!! Especially repricing existing hoodies in store. Despite DAY's comments to the contrary about not increasing prices of core items here we go .... guess you can't believe anything lulu says these days!

Anonymous said...

Louis Vuitton of stretchy pants - LMAO! I'm in Oregon and I won't be buying anymore scubas. Darn it. I am a fairly new newbie (spent well over $1000 in three months), but I am done with how customers are getting treated by the company. There are three fabulous educators at the Bridgeport store and I will miss seeing them. I would love to hear about other companies!

Anonymous said...

ps: I just checked and all of the regular Scubas are off of the website right now. Hmmmmm

Anonymous said...

The price of cotton has skyrocketed Lululemon has a choice increase prices or decrease quality, sadly they have been doing both lately.

The Scuba is not worth the price IMO, I will purchase technical fleece instead from another company, but they too have cheapened up their lines, using nylon instad of cotton on their ribbing (north face), but it is cheaper and more functional than Lulu.

Anonymous said...

Now I can not even find a regular scuba at the $98 price on the US side...It has been removed for update...only $108 SE are available

momof5 said...

I called today about the missing scubas and the uneducator said that maybe they are all sold out -- and I said all colors and sizes including black that has been there FOREVER are now sold out-- I was like really -- all colors and sizes sold out in a few hours on items that have been there for a long time- i asked if it had anything to do with repricing and the girl was completely unaware -- I would think a guest educator should have SOME answers, no? -- i am getting so completely frustrated with this company

Anonymous said...

Really and some were just uploaded on wednesday with the new upload...completely ridiculous!!!!!!

Rach said...

I plan on calling lulu today and giving them a piece of my mind, as everyone else who doesn't like this. The price hike makes me sick! I don't mind paying 108 for a sweater now but at least correct your quality problems FIRST before hiking your prices! On the Canadian website all the scuba's are $128! I thought that the solid colors were going to be $108.. ugh common lulu get it together! Once again I think everyone that doesn't like this price increase to call lulu and let them know! We deserve a say too!

Anonymous said...

Actually the iris and toothpate are still just 98 on canada side and the tango red and grapeseed are 108 along with some other colors...they are just not available on the US side

Anonymous said...

The problem is probably thr mark ups Lulu sees on Ebay...most of the new hoodies are 140.00 or so on Ebay and Lulu probably believes that is what they are worth if people are buying them for that much on Ebay

Sheezy said...

128 for hoodies that look OLD after two washes? I'd pay $128 for a top quality hoodie that didn't fade exponentially with each wash. After my frustrating experience with a regular priced Scuba ($98), I'm not buying any non technical outerwear made of cotton. The price doesn't match the quality.

J said...

The last hoodie I bought for 120$ was from Marc Jacobs off Gilt. If Lululemon thinks that it can compete with MJ for market share then they deserve what's coming... hahahaha.

Anonymous said...

Honestly I tried other less expensive brands, such as Gap Body Fit, Lucy, Champion etc. Honestly they are just fine for me. I still have lots of Lululemon but I would mix and match with other brands. I can save lots of $ this way.

RunningOnCoffee said...

That is pretty ballsy to up the price on hoodies already out there. They could have at least waited til they rolled out the next round of them. I'm not paying over $100 for a NON-technical hoodie. I'm with you - I'd look at other brands like TNF, Arc'teryx, Columbia, etc. if I'm going to drop that kind of money.

Anonymous said...

I bet their technical jackets will go up too, the colors fade on them just like their cotton.

Lynn-Ann said...

the scuba has been removed from the website, but they are not sold out....thats bullshit for the (un)educator to tell someone that...i have a black scuba in my shopping bag currently and i guess i should purchase it!!!
as far as everything else, i do agree with what most people are saying about the color line...i am enjoying the colors this summer, but would love some bright colors in some of their pieces....
AND the website sure isn't any better than it was before...... their return/exchange process is very frustrating (while returning a pair of crops at my local mail and ship place and the clerk told me that athleta sends a separate shipping tag for their customer to return items, how convenient is that!!!!) the availability of certain items in colors and sizes hasnt improved....(i frequently visit modcloth.com and when they have an item that is out of stock they give you the option of sending you an email when that item is restocked!)
just saw that the downtime jacket that was in loot last week on the website at full price....really!!??
so i love lululemon. but i think i will be taking my money elsewhere for a lot of other pieces (ill tell you where! patagonia, mountain hardwear, prana...) sad.sad. sad.

Anonymous said...

I am new to lulu and have already seen a major difference. Their web site is worse, returns harder and their customer service has gone way down. In the past if you sent an e mail you had a response in 24 hours. Now it is more like a week scubas they are way out of line . Sounds like they may have a new decision maker who is out to make a name for themselves.

I really hope they stop this foolish price increases. Don't the realize money is tight these days

It's not that I can't afford a $100+ hoodie, but it better be something special because I only buy one new workout jacket/year. (Arizona)

LuluAddict gave a shout out to Hyde Yoga and Creem Collection. Here's another up and coming yoga collection that's pricey but has innovative designs, we'ar yoga clothing from New Zealand.

http://www.wearyogaclothing.com/

Their Metropolis Hoodie is $155(US), but is way cuter than a Scuba hoodie.

It isn't just Scubas! Black modern racers @ my store are now $42 instead of $39 ;(
All other colors were still $39 and it was not a sticker on the tag so it must be just the new stock.

BUMMER Lulu!!

I have 5 Scubas, all which I bought this year. I have yet to wear all of them yet, so this price increase will encourage me to NOT buy anymore until I use what I own. While I can afford the $108 pricetag for the solid scubas, my preference is for the pattern/striped Scubas, and will most likely not buy them at $128 - $148. I'm in Toronto, and see Scubas everywhere, and I think that people will still buy the solid scubas with the $10 price increase :( In a warmer climate, the price increase may have more of an impact. I'm not too sure about the SE Scubas though - $148 for a HOODIE is insane, and I think that alot of these hoodies will end up on sale.

Cathy said...

I'm from eastern Canada and I will still buy the hoodies for $108, but I can't really see me spending $148 for one. it would have to be pretty amazing !

this is ridiculous. I am a pilates instructor my studio was studio of the month. Last team our staff got a free shirt for teaching a class there and this we didn't. The store didn't supply breakfast bars or fruits. Now I am less inclined to shop there. Im getting sick of Lululmeon's ever growing corporate stinginess and now shopping other active wear.

This is pure greed, plain and simple! I thought friends are more important than money? Yeah right! I've been a good friend to lulu over the years but I can't condone the recent behavior and dishonesty from them lately and no longer feel good about spending my hard earned money on their brand because it now stands for something completely opposite of what it once was. They've gotten too big for their own good and have lost their way. Very sad

AZ LULU FAN, thanks for posting the other lines. I will take a look. I love new fun yoga lines that are interested in building and keeping a customer base.

As for the Scubas, I noticed when I stopped in at LLL today they all have the little white sticker with $108 on the plain and all SE were $148. A $40 price hike on the same Scubas that were in there Thursday? Ouch.
I said something to the educators and they are not happy either. It's a price hike for them too. They were actually pretty disappointed with what's going on.

I looked online and when I was looking at the SE's the price changed from $108 to $98 and then back to $108 about 2 min later so they are adjusting the prices on those. Get them now if you want to have a swan song Scuba because I think the price will be up tomorrow.

I know the price raise would make these hoodies expensive, but don't you guys care about fit and style? All of the hoodies listed at the end of this post look like they're designed for boy bodies (and are not very cute at all). And have none of you paid $300 for a pair of jeans? Or more for a winter jacket or blazer? Inflation happens. I know a lulu hoodie is no designer pair of jeans or winter coat, but it's not like they're even reaching those prices. As long as lululemon continues to make fashionable clothes that actually suit my petite but feminine frame, I will continue to buy from them. I don't own a scuba, but do love the fit on all the other lulu hoodies I own--and luckily for lululemon, they're the best fit I've found! I also haven't seen any decrease in customer service at my local stores, they've always been amazingly friendly. Maybe I'm just lucky in that regard.

I don't mean to be insulting or negative...just my two cents.

RunningOnCoffee said...

@anon/7:46- Fit and style is nice, but I also care about function. TNF has actually started make more fitted and feminine styles in the last couple years. The Scuba hoodies are not technical, and actually they're kinda boxy in the shoulders for me anyway. I have never spent $300 on a pair of jeans, a ski jacket, or any single piece of clothing (wedding dress excluded).

Inflation happens...but it doesn't happen 30% at a time, it's gradual.

Anonymous said...

I'm excited about the 5 Yr Pima coming back. Has anyone tried them?

Anonymous said...

@Anon7:46,
Inflation happens when cotton and other costs are going up and NOT when they are dropping fast and Lulu hasn't yet put in their buy orders for the remainder of the year like they stated on their conference call! The price hike has nothing to do with inflation, unless by inflation you mean Lulu wanting to inflate their already extremely fat profit margins in a bad economy at the expense of their loyal customer base!! Marking up the hoodies already in the stores is inexcusable!! Shame on you Lulu! :(

Anonymous said...

It costs Lulu $25.00 to make their Scubas...yes $25!

Anonymous said...

All hoodies are off of the website tonight. It will be interesting (but not surprising at this point) when they show up at $148. I know there are two new colors coming into stores tomorrow. They didn't know at the store what the color codes meant and I couldnt figure it out.

I'm a fan - but Lululemon is starting to piss me off. First there are the restrictions on the "Angels". Then they limit the generous and informative product notifications we used to get from our local stores. Now the outrageous price increases. What next?

It takes years, even decades to build up a brand name's reputation - but that reputation could be destroyed overnight. And don't forget - the flip side of love is hate. Lululemon better shape up or else another loyal fan will be finding something else to wear!

Anonymous said...

my favorite hoodies are by Free City ($140-200), so i have no problem spending money on a hoodie, but Lululemon's shady business practices really annoy the heck out of me.

i'm happy to say it's been 8 weeks since my last Lulu purchase. i've only been in the store twice, too. still waiting for an improvement in customer relations and better made products.

I wonder..if you get the aquamarine scuba hoodie, would it fade as much as the brighter ones apparently have?
