Info on Delayed Clam Digger Shipping

If you've ordered Clam Diggers from the website and that part of your order was withheld, you are probably going to receive this email:

Hi there,

Oops...Shucking cramp! We are experiencing a small delay on all orders for Clam Digger crops due to an irregularity in our packaging process. Some style colours carry a smell due to the packaging, but it's only temporary and the pants will be just how you want them when they arrive.

To make sure everything is okay, we have decided to delay shipping on those styles so we can ensure the product is ready to wear as soon as you get it.
(Thanks to Ms. J. for sharing her email)

It has been reported that some of the Clam Diggers people have tried on in the stores have a fishy odor. A comment on this blog told us A fishy smell in new clothes typically comes from a formaldehyde resin used to make clothes wrinkle-resistant (I never knew that).

Formaldehyde use in clothing is very common, according to my googling. The most usual side effect is skin irritation. Formaldehyde and other manufacturing chemcials are why we are supposed to launder new clothes before wearing (which I never do).

formaldehyde is carcinogenic. so exercising in unwashed lulu is probably counterproductive.

Kristin said...

LOL @ anon 9!!!
Is lulu going to manufactor more clam diggers or are they going to attempt tO remove the odor fromthe existing stock? I ask bc I've read some comments that the Odor is somewhat present after washing. Maybe not as potent but it still lingers. How would they remove the Odor???

Anonymous said...

Please wash your clothes before you wear them.

I worked in a store for a couple of years and if you saw what was left behind on some of the pants after people would try them on, you'd wash them.

Really, not joking.

@ anon 9:50
So Gross! Thanks for the tip! I will now be washing before wearing.

@anon 9:00. That's too funny:-D

Anonymous said...

I ALWAYS launder my clothes before wearing. Not only because of the chemicals on fabrics but what about if someone tried that stuff on before you! Or rats or roaches crawled all over it in the warehouse! You don't know where it was before it came into your life, and I don't wear underwear with a lot of lulu stuff, EWWWWW!

Anonymous said...

is anyone else bothered by lulu calling it a problem with the packaging if it indeed caused by stuff they put into the clothes?

Anonymous said...

I ALWAYS wash my new clothes before wearing them. I would never consider doing otherwise. I'm always grossed out when I read people wearing their Lulu for the first time without washing prior to that.... :(

Anonymous said...

@ Anon 10:06
I was thinking the same thing. I feel like Lulu lies to us a lot, though. So this is nothing new.
This is obviously not a comparable situation, but I am reminded of how the company handled the whole co-worker on co-worker violence thing. They didn't really seem to honor the victim in any special way. The PR strategy seemed to be more "let's ignore this until it blows over."
In my opinion Lulu rarely admits to mistakes, but they really aren't fooling anyone with that act. I'm not saying the company is evil or anything. I love their clothes and I love a lot of things about the brand. I just wish they were a little more upfront about things.

Anonymous said...

Lulu stock down $4 and one particular investment bank has a BIG short position. I think i'm going to join and short this stock ;) especially considering fishy smell aka irregular packaging, camel toe crotch, formaldehyde, and junk left inside the pants from women trying them on perhaps without underwear.. WTF is going on with this company?? okay gotta run! better check the "we made too much section" for good deals before they're all gone. I still LOVE Lulu!!! what is wrong with me???

Anonymous said...

If putting formaldehyde into the clothing makes them wrinkle-resistant, then why do so many of the fabrics still wrinkle? I don't hang my tanks in the closet but fold them nicely in a drawer. The flowy tanks are always somewhat wrinkled. Problem not solved with chemical intervention.

You all have been bringing up so many QC points lately that I question my own Lulu ethics. I'm not sure what bothers me the most and what is the tipping point for my cutoff. Made in China, CT, fabrics changing/thinning, seams separating, formaldehyde, bleeding, etc. The perception of quality Lulu products is starting to thin itself.

Sending a witty email does not fix the overall downward spiral. I think I may need to check out of Lulu and back into Prana, Beyond Yoga and Hardtail. Plus, there's a new company called Pura Karma that is supposedly starting up in Poway, CA but hasn't yet launched their online website. However, some items are available on Amazon (sneak peek?). Made in the USA is becoming more important. Plus the eco-friendliness of some of these brands hopefully means no chemicals. Peace!

@10:06 a.m. - I noticed the "due to the packaging process" comment in their press release as well. So they are blaming the smell on the "packaging process," thereby implying that it's not from anything IN the material.

Suuuure. Okay.

Minda said...

I'm not sure if the process can be corrected with products that have had not been cured properly through the wrinkle free treatments.

There are a couple ways of making things wrinkle resistant/free/ iron free etc. One is to dye the fabric douse it with the formaldehyde base res,in mixture then cut and sew press along desired seams IE front presses on slacks etc.... and bake to cure. Another way just does the treatment after cutting and assembling the garment. . yet another is gassing the clothing with all kinds of chemicals in an effort to lessen the formaldehyde usage - but it is still there and clothing should always be washed. Then baked to cure - so all of those ways still has the application of extreme heat to CURE. I wonder if they will just take the bite and make new ones? You can be for sure I will be smelling everything before removing tags!!

Anonymous said...

I own a LS Swiftly that smelled fishy the first time I washed it. Wonder if that was a formaldehyde issue as well?

Oh happy day!!! My Currant Scuba arrived today in all its glory! Fish free- and perfectly lovely!! When lulu does it right they NAIL IT! This is hands down the best hoodie I've ever had. i have two now - black and now red. If you don't have one and red is your color I suggest jumping on it next time it arrives to the site. - Gorgeous, rich, true red! DANCE oF JOY!

used to work in retail but not specifically lululemon....but its best to wash everything including the items they get in the back (which you may think it has been untouched by other customers). i used to see things dropped on the floor....kicked to the side alongside the dustbunnies......many times were these clothes picked up after many hours.....quickly dusted off, and back on the hanger it goes.....+, i've manned the fitting rooms before. ppl try on clothes without panties.....and bra!
no joke! ok short story. once a tiny elderly lady went to go try on something that was see thru (meant to layer with another tank). she wore it without a bra and came walking out of the fitting room showing everyone and what everyone thought.

ok. end of story. bye!

Got my currant scuba yesterday! Absolutely lovely. My first one!!! How are you going to store yours? Seems its too heavy for a hanger. I don't want to mess it up!

@anon 11:27am:
I agree with you. I questioned my own ethics, and decided to separate from Lululemon. I just couldn't take my own hypocrisy anymore- I would complain and get mad, then I realized I was being stupid for feeding into my problem. I have been going to Athleta, and I want to try some of the other brands people are suggesting. I still like reading the blogs, though.

Yaaay!!! We are all Currant Scuba Sisters! I usually just half fold my Scubas, criss croos the arms, and the hood folded width wise and resting atop the body. I have Scuba totes (I know, dorky...). See through and the length is just perfect for Scubas, half folded width wise, packed loosely.

Just posted my take on the Scoop Me Up tanks that I just received from the upload. I'll paste it here, in a next post. Love them!

yogibabe said...

Totally OT, but I'm excited...

Just received my Scoop Me Up tanks in pow and ray. I just LOVE them!
No droopy/saggy issue that I've heard a lot with this tank. Someone even posted that you will get the droopy look even if you are small chested. Well, I'm glad that's not the case for me. :) I am 32A, for reference. Pretty tank and perky look! Fit is TTS. A little "pit flap" going on, but not any different than most tanks, for me. Never really a fan of the adjustable bra, (remember Push Ur Limits with those things..)but once you have it on, you don't feel the plastic hooks. So happy that I ordered it. Saw some size 4 in deep indigo, this morning. If it's still available, I will order one!

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know if Calvin Klein performance wear is good? A Calvin Klein sportswear shop opened up....right opposite a Lululemon store.

Anonymous said...

@yogibabe- I love my scoop me up tank-pow pink & ray, and I just ordered black. Didn't see indigo in a 4. I don't think there's sagging, either! I love the look & fit- my new favorite tank!

Everyone must have received the email at least once on what to do with Bounty dryer sheets other than using them in the dryer, right? I have visions of Lulu buying caseloads of dryer sheets to stick in the plastic bags of Clam Diggers and to place in every order shipped to eliminate odors.

Pure Karma has some pretty stuff on amazon, but I really hate the feel of polyester, especially recycled polyester.

Anonymous said...

Wow, trying on without underwear?! Gross! I have always washed pants before wearing, but not shirts. Now I will always do both.

I went to an Athleta store opening this week. Not much tempting to me there, as I don't like fabrics that feel like bathing suits. But the patterns were pretty. There was one top that tempted me and I may go back and try on after the new store madness ends.

The red scuba is so pretty. I don't wear red well, though. Plus, I just got the gorgeous herringbone special edition scuba, which I adore. I also have it in royalty, which is quite pretty.

zobha is having a big sale now, too, for those exploring new brands. Crops for $40, and some really nice jackets and tops. I think it's zobha.com. The crops are Supplex but I don't know if they'll be as soft as Beyond Yoga Supplex. I doubt it. Plus, all the sale items -- at least those I bought -- are final sale. No returns. But check out fitsugar.com for a zobha crop review. Sounds good. We'll see.

Bummer that the 4 is gone. All sizes were available early this morning, in Deep Indigo. Stalking the site for a re stock. ;)
Ordered the white/metallic silver, as I like the contrasting neck. :)

Saw the Pure Karma at Nordstrom. Wasn't impressed with it, so I didn't try any. Also saw and tried the Zella's version of lulu's Embrace Crop; Zella 'Live In' Ruched Capri Leggings. Looks promising online, but fits awful when I tried it on. Too big, especially in the waist, for me. And that was the XS. The fabric doesn't feel up to par with lulu, either. Darn it lulu! You have so many problems lately, but you still have the best yoga wear for me. Come on! Get your act together!!!

@Yogibabe and AmyB YAY Currant Scuba Sisters Unite!!
Well after dancing around my living room in it and showing it off to my hubs, I found a matching hanger to my black one and hung it up. I have some robust hangers for outerwear! I can't wait to wear it this fall =)

The other color I wish I got in this was SNORKEL. Totally fabulous blue. google it if you haven't seen! Thats next on my scuba list LOL.

YOGI!- I'm so glad your scoop me up is a hit for you!!! It really is a cute top! The ray will be awesome paired with blue leggings!

yogibabe said...

@Minda
I'm going to wear the ray with either the lapis Gathered Legging or the pink dahlia Low Rise Capri from Beyond Yoga! Got my order yesterday and the crops are faboo! The tops are okay, not too in love with it. Mostly due to the "cup less" shelf bra. Just didn't feel like flashing my high beams at fellow yogis in the wee hour of our morning practise, when it is still a bit chilly. Yikes!

The Quilted vest was the best buy of this order. The small fitted fine and the quilted supplex is heavenly...I am now stalking for them to re stock the white quilted crop. Thanks again for the heads up. :)

LLA: How do I send pics?

Just got my Sun Sprinter shorts and LOVE them. Got a size 8 (I wear 8 in all pants- WUC, Inspires, Grooves) and they are super comfy and flattering. I have to size up in Speeds so I would say stick with your usual size. The length is awesome too. and the waistband is a bit higher (Wouldn't call it "high" like the website maybe medium rise) and absolutely no digging in. I am a size 6 on top though, I have a small waist but larger thighs and butt. I also got the Scoop Me Up tank- I can already feel it pulling at my neck and armpits so I think it's going back. Plus the support is definitely not there like in the Scoopneck tank. Probably will take it to my store and see if they have any remaining Scoopnecks left behind to exchange it.

I have to wash clothes (in All detergent, as I'm allergic to others) before I wear or else I break out in a rash - I was told by a doctor that they use all types of chemicals on clothes and to wash a minimum of once before wearing anything.

OT - I was on a roadtrip the last two weeks and missed currant scubas?! Also stopped in an REI and they had Lucy brand yoga clothes; I didn't have time to try them on, but I think that brand has been mentioned here before. And I am super loyal to REI, they have the best return policy ever (literally bring things back years later, but please don't abuse it as we'd like them to keep the policy! :-) ) and respect their customers. Here's what is currently online there. http://www.rei.com/search?query=lucy They also carry prana, patagonia, and some other cute/responsible companies' stuff. Just a thought for folks looking for other options. I haven't been buying much Lulu lately, I'm not into bright colors and things haven't fit right lately, but I still check every upload to see what's there...

Since people have been discussing other brands, I'd just like to share my experience at Patagonia today:

I had a jacket with tags but no receipt that was purchased several months ago from a retailer in a color I didn't care for. I brought the jacket in to exchange it for a cuter color. The sales associates smiled (sincerely, not snarkily) and said they'd be happy to exchange my jacket, no problem. Sadly, they didn't have the color that I wanted in stock. It's also sold out online and in all stores (because they actually have a database where they can tell you what stores have it in stock - and don't mind checking!). The store I was at (SoHo) also didn't have my second choice color in stock, but the store on the Upper West Side did. They called to confirm with the store that it was in stock (without me asking them to) and then asked if I would like for the store to hold the item for me, ship it to the SoHo store, or have it couriered to my apartment TODAY - and of course, they would gladly waive any courier fees, all because they didn't happen to have the item on hand! I never had to ask, grimace or complain for in order to be treated like a valued customer. They just did it. And like I said - without a receipt!
As far as companies go, I'll gladly hand over $125 to patagonia for a windbreaker jacket. All their products come with a LIFETIME UNCONDITIONAL guarantee. Period. They make products and stand behind them. Plus, I know there's no fomeldehyde on my clothes either...Patagonia strives to be an Eco friendly company. Talk about ethos!

So why do i still buy Lulu? Simple -lulu is cute. But beware, lulu, other companies are catching on. Patagonia used to be very dowdy, but each season their cuts get younger and cuter. I have a couple pairs of their skinny jeans. And Patagonia does bright fun colors. Lulu's days are numbered if they don't get their act together...other companies are realizing theres a lot of money to be made in cute, quality athletic clothing.

MonkeyGirl said...

Wow, Sophia- I forgot what a pleasure good customer service is! And I hope you are right and that some other companies step it up in design. I am buying so much less lulu, but I still come back as the designs are generally cuter.

Speaking of cute designs-

@AmyB- you asked how to store your scubas? I generally fold mine- but my new currant one? I got it a few days ago and have yet to put it away. I just left it on my couch so I can admire it. How sick is that? ;)

Yay! My Sun Sprinter shorts are due to arrive on Saturday. So excited by them! The waistband looks great in the online pics. I think these are going to fit me really well. I am also a tiny waist, full hips and thighs girl. So, I don't feel comfortable in speed shorts (too short). I know a lot of people were posting that they wanted a liner, but I'm actually glad to have 1 pair of shorts without. It's handy for lounging or running errands because if I'm not running, then I just don't need a liner. Actually when I am running, do I really need a liner? Obviously for skirts, the liner is key, but I'm not sure what purpose the liner serves for shorts anyway.

Minda said...

I love liners in shorts- two for one laundry day here - same with built in bra cami sports tops!!

All the happy comments from my Currant Scuba sisters make me smile. I was lucky to get one when it was first uploaded, wore it last Christmas... Lovely :)
@yogibabe: thanks for the Scoop Me Up review. From your past posts, it looks like we're about the same size, so I'm looking forward to getting mine. Btw I live in sunny Singapore, which you've mentioned visiting and order my Lulu from the website (works out to be cheaper and I get the latest styles). Why do I wear Scubas here (not to mention my other Lulu jackets)? To the freezing movie theatres and malls with the AC turned way up :)

Sophia: I completely agree with you. Patagonia's sales associates actually treat their customers like people *GASP*!! I am lucky enough to have an outlet store where I live, so I go there all the time and the people there are extremely personable and welcoming. I've been wearing my better sweater to death for 4 years and it looks like new.

@3grrls
Yes, I was frozen solid while shopping and watching movies in my shorts and halters/tanks in Singapore! Never thought to bring my Scubas to a tropical location. :) Bought my lulu at Pure Yoga at Ngee Ann Tower. (Don't ask me how I remember to spell the name of the tower, it just popped in my mind!

3grrls said...

@yogibabe: You got the name of the building exactly right :) There are a couple of studios here which carry a limited selection of lulu at high prices, including the one I do pilates at, and I always have fun talking lulu with the instructors who are as addicted as I am! I'm always in shorts but will carry a vinyasa scarf so I don't freeze. Love this blog and the regulars who post here. Feel like we're friends chatting about our obsessions over tea :)

OT- had anyone ever had an issue with orders taking forever to ship!? I placed my order almost three full days ago now and it still hasn't shipped! I know there's a 24-48hr policy, but I've never seen lulu take more than a day to process my order... Probably not the end of the world but it takes over a week to get to me so this just delays it even longer!!

anon 4:43 hang in there- they are probably all freaking out on damage control from the fishy clam digger situation.

To the anon asking for a reference on Calvin Klein workout clothes, go for if you can afford it. It's fantastic and last ages! I love love and treasure the few pieces I bought a couple of years ago, when I was living in Manhattan and coukd walk to a CK store that carried this line. If the quality hasn't changed, the fabric CK uses is very very soft and hugs your body in a very sexy and flattering way. Unfortunately, I no longer live in the States and there are not CK stores where I now live.

fishy clam diggers...... i think the chinese factory workers wore these to dig for clams before packaging them.

i have worn my lulu without washing. i threw up a little in my mouth reading all these posts about f@#*ed up people trying on clothes without undergarments. barf! ALL my new clothes will go to the laundromat before wearing. thanks for all the advice

Pink Peony 4 said...

Okay fishy smell I can handle if it goes away after one wash. After all we should all wash before wear, right? it I will be really angry if it doesn't. We can't blame the Chinese for the fishy smell. Those people probably don't even know what lululemon is and how much it is selling for. They just do what Lulu tells them to do. No I am not for sure since I have not worked in a sweat shop before. I figured we owe them what upwards of some trillion dollars now? I think it's obvious they know what they're doing and we maybe do not. No offense. BTW, I am bummed to totally miss out on the currant scuba. What is this all about? Don't tell me it was on WMTM!!! I have yet to buy one scuba and waiting for the right color. I could have definitely gone for that. I am still waiting for my really big purchase to come in from the last upload and WMTM (everyday I find something). Should be here on Saturday. I hope.

@ 4:43pm: i too had two orders that were lapsing into the third day. i ended up getting emails (yes, multiple) from LLL stating they had a glitch in their computer system. One of the items was not available on each order, despite what the computer inventory indicated (hmmm, inventory control anyone? GIGO at its best!) and by the time they figured it out, all the other stuff sold out (even though I already paid for each order???).

anyhow, i was offered free overnight shipping with the first cancelled order, and a full refund. for the second cancelled order, i was offered a $20 gift card OR free overnight shipping, and a full refund. ironically, a couple days after all of this transpired, the items that were part of my original orders miraculously showed back up on the website at 6:30am EDT (GEC doesn't open until 8am EDT)--same style, color, size, quantity (1, of course). so, i just reordered everything...i called the GEC a little after 8am EDT to see if they could refund my CC on the new order with the $20 GC they offered to me and change it to expedited shipping. "nope, sorry, can't change an order once it's made". seriously, you can't issue a $20 refund on my CC (not PayPal, which is a whole world of PIA for price adjustments and refunds) and cite the redemption of a $20 GC that you yahoos offered because of your screw up??? the shipping thing I can kinda understand--they probably issue the packing slip and shipping label as soon as the order is placed knowing the weight of each item ordered. however, if that stuff arrives and smells like fish, I AM DONE WITH LULULEMON. Athleta, Beyond Yoga, Zobha, even Patagonia...they will become my new best friends.

Pink Peony! the currant scuba was not on WMTM! It was just ninja loaded to the jackets page. There were only two sizes I think 8 and 10. In a red hot moment . . .they were gone! (actually maybe a day or so!)
Anyway- don't fret! It wasn't a wmtm miss out.
- What color are you hoping for specifically? I will blow the fog horns if I see it for ya!!!!

As others have already pointed out, MANY reasons to wash new clothes before you wear. I ALWAYS do!!!

Once, I had to bring a pair of crops back to LLL to have a seam fixed. This is seriously annoying no matter how long you've worn a LLL item, as I expect the quality to be superior (as we know, of late it is not!) But after only one wear and two washes?! I nicely told the girl this and she said: you washed them twice? I said: "Yes, once before I wore them and once after I ran in them." Her response: "Oh, interesting!" And I thought: "Really? Doesn't everyone do that?!" I know I do, I know my family and friends do. Sooo I guess by this board, I have my answer as to what others do...

I am new to Lulu... Walked into a store in Hawaii the day after Christmas on vacation and almost had to be life flighted out of there due to excitement.
So... Needless to say, I am making up for YEARS of deprivation!!!!! The amount I have accumulated is just sick. Oh well.... I just love it! I would love a great sky blue scuba! And I am SO bummed the stripped rehearsal ls never made it to website. It's my one that got away!
U girls are too fun!

And this is exactly why I love patagonia! Amazing customer service, lifetime guarantee, and business ethics that are thoughtful and responsive to feedback. None of the arrogance or belittling of customers. Lululemon still has cuter stuff, but Patagonia is getting better. I love my fleeces, down coats, and windbreakers (Fiona and Houdini are my favorites!)

@Pink Peony 4
Actually, I managed to snag the lone size 4 of the ninja upload (as per Minda!) of the currant Scuba. The size 4 was gone after my order was completed. There were still size 6, 8 and 10 when I left the site and then, the currant Scuba was history. We'll keep an eye out and holler if anything else that is "highly coveted" made a ninja appearance!

I also love Patagonia and really respect not just their customer service but also their business ethics, including advocating not buying more than you need! In my mind that is absolutely revolutionary for retail?! But it makes sense and they mean it, making products to last! I bought 2 pairs of running shorts. 1 pair is really cute on. The other pair isn't as nice in but the fabric feels fantastic when I run.
