Sun Runner Short Sleeve Top - First Wearing Review

Last week I bought the white Sun Runner Short Sleeve top in white. I wore it this Sunday for a seven mile run (I am continuing to plug away at training for the Sea Wheeze). The weather was sunny and in the low 70s. I liked this top a lot. When it's warm out I prefer a tank with an open back for max cooling but I hate having to wear sunscreen.  Even with sunscreen I am getting burned a lot. I found the Sun Runner very cool for a shirt that covered my back. I like the open bottom and armpits. The material is buttery soft and feels great against your skin. I really appreciated the venting when a breeze kicked up.  This top has gone to the top of my list for my race outfit on Sea Wheeze day. I know it's kind of weird to have the side of your bra showing out your armpit but it's not much different from wearing a No Limit Tank. I wish it came in lilac but I think I might go back get the Flash Light one. It's different looking but it's a great top functionally for running. I could have sized down in this but I bought my normal tank size so that it wouldn't be too clingy.

I really want the long sleeve, but it has not come out in flash light...which is what I really want... :(

i really hate this top. i could never.

I haven't bought anything except a bra, in 6 months. LOL... Nothing has come out...that has gotten me super excited! Prices have gone up and nothing all that amazing, has caught my eye. I'm a small gal, but have 38 DD ta tas...and many of the newer bras, have been only going up to size 8!!! That doesn't exactly work, for big chested gals. I have found myself....straying to other brands to be wowed.

LLA , I also bought this sun runner ss but in flash light. I would have to agree with you. This shirt is awesome. I like how airy it feels when you run with this shirt. Its my new favorite run top.

I wish it was in the lower 70s where I live. It's upwards of 90+ w/ 80-95% humidity. It sucks. But that's the price I pay living in FL. I love FL so I will endure the summer. I like the idea of this shirt and think it looks great on ALL the models that I've seen. But when it's this hot outside, running naked is still scorching!! It's not weird to have the side of your bra showing. I run in a sports bra only. So in order to endure the heat, we do what we need to do. Right? LLA, I think you should get the flash light one.

I actually really want this top! I'm going to a store this Thursday - but I'm nervous it will be gone so I'm tempted to order it online, but don't want to because I'm research & development so get a discount in store. Plus I really want to try it on first - I'm a size 6 in lots of tanks and a size 8 in some so wouldn't know what to get! I would also love the long sleeve version but I wish it had mesh or open at the armpits as well, when I've run in my s/s swiftlies the armpits get gross! That's where I need the venting! Wish it came in Lilac too!

@ Anon 11:38AM. I am also R&D. I order things online in case they sell out. Then, when the item arrives, if I couldn't get it at the store, I have it. If I could get it at the store, then I return the online item explaining that the R&D discount isn't applicable online. I have never had a problem, and the educators seem to understand that R&D are, in the words of one educator, in a "catch-22".

I bought the sun runner SS in flash light, and I love it. I figure the bra thing is no different to the practice freely, or no limits as well. More importantly, I just care that my shoulders are protected as no matter what I do, the tops of my shoulders burn. I also want to be visible to cars, hence the flash light color choice for me.

I jog-walk alot in 72F to 85F Northern California South Bay Area and I bought the Sunrunner LS in Black. Its TTS and I wear it over a black Power Y tank so its pretty clingy. The Sunrunner LS keeps me cool when the sun is blazing down on me. When I take the ls off and stretch out in my Power Y tank, I actually feel hotter cuz the sweat isn't wicking off me which the LS does. I also have the Run in the Sun LS in black and its also great at keeping me covered up so the sun doesn't blaze on me, as well as wicking the sweat off me so I feel cool.

What does one do in "research and developement" ? Is this a paid position? What discount do you get? Can you live anywhere?

Anonymous said...

I'm with Kristin from FL. Even though I live in TN, in the summer time the temp often hits high 80s or 90 by 9 a.m. I have to get my runs in early or risk heat stoke. I cannot imagine wearIng any of these sun tops in my climate. Also, there's little chance of sunburn between 5 and 7 in the morning, so I don't need the UV protection. But I think the concept is really interesting. I'm glad a lot of people find use for these!

I think I may have to try this top, I hate slathering on sunscreen too, and for longer runs, it doesn't work anyway.

R&D means you're a yoga/barre/etc instructor who registers for free @ Lululemon and is eligible for 15% discount off purchases.

Anonymous said...

In addition to the R&D explanation above, it's not paid, and you can live anywhere. If you teach a fitness class or are a personal trainer, you just have to provide a business card or a class schedule with your name on it.

This is totally OT but I just got my faded dot embossed/flash light Sun Sprinter Crops in the mail and am surprised to see the polka dots are different sizes on each leg. Not at all as pictured on the model. The right leg has large dots like the ones pictured on the website while the left leg has small dots, about the size of the head of a pencil. Anyone else experience this with the dots? I'm trying to decide if this makes them look quirky or cheap. I think it bugs me enough to return them even though I really like the fit. But at $88 shouldn't I expect perfection? Or, at the very least, symmetry?

Anonymous said...

Sourkraut; that sounds like a quality control issue. why on earth would the dots be different sizes unless the wrong fabric was used???

i get so excited when those packages come, i would have been totally disappointed!!!!

I saw those dotted crops in the store last week. I was going to try them on until I saw what you are remarking on. The dots are indeed different sizes and even nonexistent in some areas just on one side of the legs. I think Lulu was going for eclectic and an uniformed sort of look. All the crops in the store i went to ALL had that dot problem on one leg.
I think it looks unfinished and like "seconds", not at all "stylish" like lulu was going for...not worth the $88 if you ask me. I didn't even try them on for that reason alone and I LOVE a good pair of Luxtreme crops.

Sourkraut said...

@Anon 4:47 PM -- Yeah, I'm really bummed. Since I posted that I've decided they're definitely going back. It looks as if the crops were made from two different bolts of fabric. Annoying, especially considering how much they're charging.

@Anon 4:54 PM -- Oh no, now I'm really sad to hear they're all like that. I don't think it's stylish either. I was hoping to exchange them but I think it'll have to be a return. That'll make my husband and my bank account happy.

Sourkraut has me wanting a ls rehersal - even though i would be sweating in it all summer in florida LOL. ---anyway this review of the sun runner top has me interested in trying it out!

Sourkraut said...

Just got this reply from a Lulu rep when I posted the question on their Facebook wall:

"The Faded Dot Embossed print is not a uniform pattern, so the dots start a lot larger on one side and will gradually fade into smaller dots, then nothing. Because the pattern isn't uniform, each piece will be unique with its distribution of the patterns and a one of a kind. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the pattern, it's always appreciated!"

I guess I can sort of see what they were going for but I still don't think it's a good look for me.

R&D requires more than a class schedule or business card--you need a current paystub (meaning less than a month old) with the gym's name and address on it. Also, you have to provide a current paystub annually to confirm your continued employment in the fitness industry as a group ex instructor or personal trainer. Further, you are supposed to provide feedback via product reviews online. Hence, research & development... Ironically, the Owner of the gym I work at was declined the 15% R&D discount because she does not actually teach a class nor train--she just works and exercises at the gym she owns. She was told "only instructors or trainers who use our clothing during their "work" in the fitness industry can receive the discount because they can speak personally about the performance of our clothing". Uh huh...right...sure.

Also, I have a friend who asked for the discount about two months ago. She does not teach, but is a certified personal trainer that works out of her home and occasional works for someone on the side. She doesn't receive a paycheck, per se. She brought in all of her certifications but the Educators would not accept them and, instead, she had to make a few phone calls to have her part-time employer actually email the store a copy of the check receipt she issued my friend for training a few months ago and verbally confirm her as a personal trainer. Personally, I would have walked out and left the $300+ worth of merchandise at the register, as I reminded them that they're #1 in my book. No discount is worth that much friggin' hassle especially with the quality issues and redonkulous prices!

I returned the sun sprinter crops as well. Small dots only on one leg, huge ones on the other. They looked like clown pants to me - for that much money, they should have been cut to make sure the dots were graduated in size.

Sourkraut said...

@Anon 6:16 PM -- I thought the exact same thing, that they looked like clown pants! Glad I'm not the only one miffed by the "uniqueness." It took a lot to talk myself into spending that much in the first place so it won't hurt too much to return them since they're not up to snuff.

I'm guessing the same thing would be the case for the black faded dot embossed WU crops? The non-symmetrical dots would really bother me.

FEAR NOT, MAY WAFS CRB WANTERS... check out http://www.lululemon.com.au/ - although we are halfway through June, it appears that woman is wearing a May WAFS crb!!! We may see it after all! Fingers crossed!

Anonymous said...

If your a runner you can also participate in the R&D program. You just have to bring in confirmation of your registration for an upcoming race to recieve the 15% discount. Since im constantly signed up for a race I'm constantly doing this.

Sourkraut said...

@ Anon 7:44 PM -- Really?! That right there might be incentive for me to actually sign up for a race one of these days. Good to know.

@ Minda -- I second what Nicole said. Hunt down one of those Rehearsal tops because you'll love it! I'm pear shaped so it's perfect to accentuate my smallness up top while flowing out and hiding my tummy. I hope to see more tops like that in the fall, maybe in some colors other than the basics.

yogibabe said...

@Crash
Yes! I saw that too, this morning. :) Thought it is the May WAFS, and would love to see it soon in Power Y too!

Anonymous said...

Y'all, I don't know. That top on the Aussie page looks a bit like the CRB I have that's a fossil and concord WAFS...I got it in April. I mean, I hope it's a May WAFS, but it might not be.

Also, now I'm tempted to get a Rehearsal LS based on what y'all are saying, and I live in TN where it's going to be hot for months!

Laurie said...

@Anon 7:44 - I'm registered for the Chicago Marathon in October. I just have to print off my registry form and show them and I get the 15% discount?

Anonymous said...

Now I want a Rehearsal LS too! Hope they restock it online. :(

Anonymous said...

watch your prices, ladies. i was in an ontario store this evening and say all three colours of the run wild jacket for FULL price ($138). online, it is $79 and also at a store about 20 minutes from the one i was at (part store, part outlet). the educator said markdowns are the store's perogative and they do what works for their location. online has a "separate warehouse" (whatever) so their prices may also be different. glad i have this blog and others so i'm an informed shopper and not paying more for items that have either been repriced or marked down!

Anonymous said...

@ Laurie, yes just bring your confirmation to the store. The educator will just take your name, email and race date and after the race they will send you an email to review the products ( though i have noticed i dont always get an email). Very easy and so worth it!

Yes, the Embossed WUC dots are asymmetrical. They fade from large to small to nothing, from top of right hip to bottom of left ankle. Interesting, but not for me.

Anonymous said...

Note: the runner discount only applies to half marathon or more. I am not yet ready for half marathon. Also, you are limited only to what u can buy to wear for the actual race. So one outfit.

Anonymous said...

I agree, I think that Aussie one looks like a grey or fossil WAFS. : ( So close! I do see the Aussie site has the FlowY in Blurred Blossom though - would LOVE one of those. Any Aussie angels? : )

Anonymous said...

@ Anonymous 9:00 I might just live near stores that arnt too strict then but I have used the R&D for 10Ks, Half and Fulls. The only product that i encounter that you cant use for the discount is headbands.

Pink Peony 4 said...

Symmetry. I agree. That's not cool to be asymmetrical. Nope.

I bought a rehearsal ls at the store and was really excited to get on board the hoopla but once again I returned it today. I just can't walk around in these right now --- it's 103 deg today in Texas. I even had another reason to buy one Since we're going to CO to play golf so I thought I'd use it then but too much material around me at the moment is unbearable. I'll buy one in the fall I'm sure I'll be ready for it then. Buy it if you have a reason to. It's comfy.

Anonymous said...

@Sourkraut: The Sun Sprinter Crop in Lilac doesn't have the embossed dots, thank God. Got that one and it was very comfortable.

Wow, thanks for all these info on how to get discounts. I ran a half marathon this April, mentioned it to the people in the stores that I'm running in the event, and they don't even mention that I can get a discount if I bring in my race registry. =(

Anonymous said...

LOL at Catch-22, #incorrectexpressionuse

Anyway if anyone running at least a half marathon can get a discount, shouldn't everyone running the Seawheeze be getting a discount??

Anonymous said...

"runner discount" does not exist. You have to be a run instructor, personal trainer, yoga teacher etc. not Highschool gym teacher, massage therapist or just someone who works out a lot - otherwise everyone would get it. (which wOuld be nice...)

LuluAddict said...

@ Crash - thanks! That will be funny they are selling a May WAFS CRB in JUNE.

Anonymous said...

Hey there happy to be your Aussie angel! Let me know the best way to make contact!

Sourkraut said...

You guys are cracking me up! Is our Lulu addiction so bad that if we can't wear an item right away we don't want it? I bought the Rehearsal LS knowing I probably won't get much use out of it until September or October. I guess because I grew up always shopping end of season sales and holding on to clothes until the next change of season I'm OK with tucking mine away in a drawer. It'll still look just as good on me in three months as it does now.

Anonymous said...

@ Anon 11:15 the runner discount does exhist for R&D I have run 2 halfs and a full since January and brought my registration in for each one and got the discount no problem. I actually found out about the program when I was talking to the educator about training and trying to decide on short or capris since my first half was the winter in a different part of the country. Runner qualify for R&D because they want reviews on how the product hold up and if your traning for 13.1 or 26.2 your logging alot of miles and really testing the products.

Anonymous said...

OT - but i live on the east coast so it takes me FOREVER to get my shipments in from lulu. I just wanted to report that I am thrilled with the power purple WUC! They are definitely a more saturated purple than the website showed, and they don't show my lumps/bumps. I also bought the XL grey CRB and am very pleased with it, it is thinner than others but I don't find it to look cheap at all. In fact, I like it a lot more than i expect i would have if it was the same as the other XL CRB fabrics!

Kristin said...

W/ the runners discount, do you get the discount for all purchases or is it for the race-day outfit or is it a one-time discount??? I already receive the discount; I'm an instructor/PT/Lifestyle Coach. But the runner's discount is GREAT news for my buddies that I run races with. Do you need to register for distance races (half- and Full-marathons) or is it for ANY race? Thx ladies. This is awesome news that I will share will my running buddies. They are going to be excited. Thx

They might tell you its that hard to get the R&D discount but it must not be at all stores. I just had to show them a copy of my yoga teacher training certificate and that was that, I always get my 15% discount. They didn’t even need verification of where and if I was teaching.
