Scuba Design Change - No More Ribbed Side Panels and Shorter? Boo!!!

No ribbed side panels = boxy fit
Well no wonder the latest Scuba hoodies are looking so boxy on the models, lulu has eliminated the ribbed side panels. Why did you mess with perfection, lulu? The Scuba was so nice - great length, super warm, great curve-hugging fit:

Ribbed side panels = curve hugging fit unlike other manufacturer's hoodies
Ribbed side panel close up

Gah, now the Scuba is just another (albeit really expensive) boxy, too short hoodie I can get anywhere. I used to hate the Scuba's predecessor, the Remix - too short, too boxy, too stiff and never bought a single one. I own four Scubas and I live in Southern California. Now you've gone back to the Remix design - short and boxy but made the jacket a little softer. Boo! Bring back the ribbed side panels! And the length!

Yeah this is exactly like the old remixes, which I specifically avoided because they have no stretch to them and I have a long torso. I realize the trend is going back to shorter tops vs longer, but for a basic hoodie it doesn't work.

Oh well. I was going to buy myself my first scuba this fall/winter but I guess I'll just spend the money elsewhere. Since scubas and WUs are the only items I'm really interested in, lulu is making it so easy to save money.

Noooooooooooooooooo!!!

Big time boo. What a disaster.

Oh dear! I know some people were complaining that their scubas were relaxing a little too much with the ribbed panels... But I thought they may have simply reduced the elasticity of the panels, not eliminate them altogether! I too, am very disappointed, I only have 2 Scubas and was looking forward to buying more this winter.

I'm assuming that they have lowered the price to compensate. ;)

I sooo agree with you......ribbed panels and length made the scuba very structured and great......will definitely miss it. I hope they continue making the scuba as it is now. I own 2 of them in dense purple and sparkle......wanted to buy another one....but will wait, I guess

I just checked my creamsicle scuba, and yes, stretch only on the arm, not torso. And I tried on my Bordeaux one then this one back to back, and definitely shorter. Boo! I love the color, but this may be going back based on principle! Seriously, why Lulu?

Wow, thanks for the heads up. All of my scubas have the ribbed side panels and I'll be certain to look closely from now on. I'm really glad I have a selection in different colors that will sustain me until they come to their senses.

But in the meantime, one less thing for me to spend my $$ on.

Worst. Change. EVER. The ribbed paneling is what gives the form-fitted/sexy sweatshirt look. The ribbed paneling is stretchy... now Scubas will just be a $100 sweatshirt. Hmmm. I'll have to try one one. This was a dumb change on Lulu's part IMHO.

Grrr! My Scuba is new (wore it for the second time today), and it's comfortable, but it's also pretty stiff. I love the colors lulu offers, but I'm not interested in paying such a high price for a jacket that adds weight to my top half. If it's not broken lulu, why mess with one of your best sellers??

So LLA here's a question for you. I wear a size 6 in all Lulu jackets and coats, but have had to size up to an 8 in the scubas to get the amount of boobage I need. The 8 the sleeves are a bit roomy, but I must do an 8 for boobage and length. with the NEW scubas not having the panelling, would I stay in an 8 or size down to a 6. Would the size 6 just be Waaay too short? What would you advise me, as I do not live near a store. ~Disp. Income girl :)

That sucks:-(

Boo, indeed! I should be glad I don't have the desire to spend that much money on a hoodie anymore, though.

What I find interesting about this change in design is the fact that Gap has their own version of the "Scuba" which is...wait for it....boxier w/no stretchy side panels! Guess I should've gotten that cute striped one at Gap after all.

There are so many scubas available on facebook selling groups and eBay so I'm not too upset about this. Most of them are barely worn and under $80. I'm getting a rocksteady gradient stripe one in the mail soon :)
I do find it annoying though that they keep making changes for the worse and increasing prices. It's almost crazy to buy anything full price now. There are SO many Run:Inspire crop colors on the website right now due to the new waistband and more sheer luxtreme that some of them must be headed to WMTM soon, which is just crazy as the colors used to sell out in a week or two!

I am so glad that I ordered the Bordeaux Scuba. It may have been the last batch of the old style. I just checked and it had the panels on the side....

And we're left with yet another incorrect, misleading item description.

Not sure whose brilliant idea it was to release a creamsicle and black combo just before Halloween. This is just an unflattering combo even on a model. Or maybe I'm just in a foul mood cuz I can no longer justify dropping $100+ on a stupid hoodie.

The length issue i could probably deal with but the side panels and formed fit is a must! Thanks for the update LLA. Wouldnt have noticed via online photos.

I think I saw a review about the ribbed panels being gone. Agree - boo! I stopped by a store today and saw that indeed on some of the newer colors, the ribbed panels are gone on the newest ones. Even the bordeaux color--which is not that old--has ribbed panels. I also don't like the way they are doing the logo, with a "terry" feel vs. nice solid stitching. Material is also thin. I didn't even bother to try any new ones on as I will now do a big pass on the new scuba. LOL they keep the price at $108, instead of lowering it. As if! I would pay so much now for lesser quality.

I am ready to move on and say bye-bye LLL!

LLL needs to change their product description that includes "side ribbed stretch panels" under key features. My latest Scuba does not have any panels and it is shorter than an older Scuba I have. The fit on the sides doesn't bother me - it's still looks fitted and not boxy. But I def prefer a longer jacket - it's supposed to fit mid-hip and that's not the case...

My old Scuba hoodies from 2002-2004 were shorter, boxier and had no ribbed side panels. The most recent one I bought was the Commuter Scuba and it has a better longer fit.

gahhhhhi hate short hoodies -.-

@ Disp. Income girl :) - I think I would stick with my normal size 8. I read a comment from a woman who said her Creamsicle was 2" shorter than a Portapottie Scuba she had. The fit wasn't snugger or noticeably looser - just not as nipped in along the waist and a bit shorter. I think the new Scubas are softer and more pliable than most of last year's Scubas. They felt like the super soft Snowy Owl and Tinted Canvas Scubas from last year.

Wow... I'm glad I decided to go with the BTC jacket and not another scuba! I already find them a little short for my liking, and shorter yet is no good. Thanks for the heads up!!

I purchased a Scuba hoodie in a Lulu outlet in the Seattle area in March 2011 that is exactly the same color as the new one in Creamsicle. It is over an inch shorter than all my others and has no ribbing on the sides - just like the new ones. I do prefer the ribbing on the sides. I had to go to a size 6 for the old style but wear a size 4 in the ribbed style. Is there a way to post a pic of my outlet scuba?

Whaaaat! I just checked my polar cream scuba and it definitely has the side panels. Since when?! What the what Lulu!

I also think this model makes the slightly shorter length look worse. I'm pretty sure she has a longer torso length than the other models, so it makes the items look shorter than they actually are.

I noticed this with her wearing the rose Define.

Thanks LLA! :) Very much appreciated.

I never liked this hoodie. trying to understand the intrigue with this hoodie. I never liked it, but I also don't like tops like that. I walk around a lot in NYC and hoodies are kinda worn by sketchy characters. I love that yellow color though

Another disappointment is the Rose Herringbone Define. The pattern is nice and the outer layer of the jacket is soft. However, the material on the inside of the jacket is so scratchy. My older Define jacket (from a year ago) was so cozy with a soft fleece like lining. Also, the cuffs on the sleeves are so stretched out and a tad longer than my older Defines. Now it looks like I have 'puppy paws' on my wrists. They will be returned.

I also tried to convice myself to keep the black swan CRB but they are not purple enough. I have a black swan tank from last year and the current one is DEFINITELY more dark/black. Last year's version was richly deep purple bluish color. Hard to keep something when you know the originial color was better.

LuluAddict said...

@ Sb - I was surprised by how not soft the Rose Herringbone define was. I thought it would a bit like my mini check pique one but it wasn't.

I bought a Flow Y bra recently in the light pink offered online and it was the SOFTEST bra material ever in the flow Y bras...and then 1 week later, I ordered the flow Y in the rose print. (Thinking it would be much softer) It came and although lovely, was a thicker material, less stretchie and def. not as soft!! I wish Lulu would make all their clothing, consistent! When you DON'T live near a store, you cannot compare items BEFORE buying. My Province NEEDS a Lulu!! I'm not interested in these "strategic partner stores," which have no inventory!

@ sb - I was thinking the same thing with the black swan... I bought the BTC jacket last week and it fits like a dream, but looks sooo black. My hubby wasn't impressed as he was thinking it's just another "black hoodie". I'm not a just plain black girl either. I like the second look to see 'oh yeah! that's a dark purple!' However, I was thinking maybe it's just a dye overload to eventually get to the original black swan color if it decides to bleed miserably. We'll see... I like the fit so much that I'm keeping it. :)

Shorter!!!!! I am 6' tall and the old Scuba was already too short. Can't they make a long version like the racerback? I would love this fantastically warm hoodie!

I finally caved and bought a plain black scuba at my local store last week. I'm glad I did it now, if they are phasing out the stretchy sides. My store must have had some older stock or something? I guess I'll be looking on eBay for scubas now. Or maybe just be done buying them. Seriously, why does Lulu mess with a good thing? Scubas, and changing the Groove pant? really, just WTH Lulu?

Tracy said...

And I just submitted a review on the lululemon site for the scuba saying basically everything I said above. I know nothing will happen, but they need called out on this. Totally ridiculous.

k2campbell said...

I think I'm the minority here but I actually prefer my new black swan scuba without the side ribbing to my others that have it. I am short and I just find this to be me more flattering, on me. But I realize that's not the overall consensus ;)

MBH said...

I received my black swan scuba in the mail yesterday and it is SO SHORT. I ordered the same size 6 that my other scubas are sized. I was so disappointed. I took the scuba to my local store today and the sales associates thought maybe there was something wrong. So they began pulling out scubas to compare. What we figured out is the "no rib" scubas you need to size up. I tried on the size 8 "no rib" scuba and it fit just like a 6 "rib" scuba. At least that is how it fit on me. I just wanted to give you a heads up.

It looks like they're re-releasing the "new" scubas as Scuba Hoodie Stretch now:

(from the facebook page)

Keen eye, Amanda. We had some hoodies released in the colours Creamsicle Pop and Glen Check Polar Cream earlier this week. The correct name is the Scuba Hoodie Stretch. Unfortunately, the new hoodies arrived with the wrong hang tags and this lead to some confusion as to which style our guests were seeing. This was a mistake on our part and we’ve temporarily removed the hoodies so we can adjust the Why We Made This to reflect the correct information. We’ll put them back online for sale next week once this has been completed. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to us here or shoot us an email to gec@lululemon.com
~Tess

Seems like Lulu may have realized how upset customers were over the switch and decided on renaming as a means of damage control.
