Miracle Jacket, Bold in the Cold Pants, More Draft Dodger Photos

First photos of the Miracle Jacket. I actually like the looks of this jacket but not the price.

A photo of black Run Bold in the Cold pants with the Polar Cream Draft Dodger jacket.

More photos of the new Draft Dodger jacket.

(The (surprising) controversy over the name of this jacket had me checking into the history of the Vietnam War and Canada a little since I was just a little kid when it all happened. The article stated that 30,000-40,000 American men emigrated to Canada during that time period and over half of them stayed after Jimmy Carter pardoned them so I can see where Canada has a much different view of the term than America does. Anywhoo, this all happened nearly 40 years ago and it's just a name of a piece of clothing. It's an interesting cultural difference, though.)

It's true, it's a defining part of Canadian history. The draft dodgers were opposed to the Vietnam War in principle, and a lot of them tended to be more left-leaning, often academics, more socialist. This fits in with Canadian values quite well, and in fact their presence in Canada likely influenced this. As another interesting side note, I travelled to Vietnam several years ago, and there they call it the "American War."

I tried on the Miracle Jacket today in Studio City. Love the knitted texture of the collar, hood and arms, and loved the french terry sueded material of the body. I just felt that the pockets on the bottom were too big and "cargo like" for the fitted style of this jacket. On my torso, because I'm apple shaped, the large square pockets didn't enhance but made me look even hippier because the fabric didn't allow for the pockets to contour around my hips. They kinda stuck out insistent on keeping it's own boxy shape down there. I really liked it and considered buying it until I saw the price tag of $298. For $198, it would have been a done deal despite my concerns. Really soft and comfy, the kind you can burrow in and never want to take off. Hopefully it'll make it to WMTM.

I might try these pants. lla, can you also report what you think if the new grooves vs old? I am needing more pants

But why would the name of the jacket even be offensive to an Ameican? A draft dodger was a person who for various reasons felt that fighting in the Vietnam war was not worthwhile and chose to leave the country in order to avoid man dopey service. It isn't derogatory, it's just the name of something. The jacket is a fun play on words -- in the winter it's drafty; this jacket will help you avoid (dodge) them! If they had named the jacket "Hooray for segregation!" or "Suffragettes suck" you might have a leg to stand on in this argument but I think this is very tongue-in-cheek (re: the portapottie color).

I could not disagree more. Whether you support those who dodged the draft or those that were drafted and fought (many of whom were killed), the name is offensive. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed during the Vietnam war; and the number goes into the millions if you include civilians. The fact that it is 'just a name of a piece of clothing' is precisely what trivializes the suffering -- both of those who stayed and fought and those who left -- to say nothing of innocent victims of the war itself. I also couldn't agree that because it happened 40 years ago it is somehow 'ancient history' or it is now acceptable to make a cheap pun about an extremely painful moment in world history. LLL lost me for a while with the Ayn Rand stuff but this is so much worse. I hope they withdraw the name.

Thanks for the review of the Miracle Jacket, Ching-a-ling! Based on that, I can't even fathom why it's priced at $300!

I do love the Draft Dodger, and am curious about what other colors it will come in. The white/black is beautiful, but I have two little ones....

'Anywho, it's just the name of a jacket'

*cringe*

I can see both sides on the controversy with the jacket. I think the fact that many very young men fought in this war because they were drafted and died for a cause that now many people very liberally seem to say wasn't worth it. It is a very sensitive topic to some- especially to those who fought in the war and lost loved ones. To me- I think it's a cute name but I would be ashamed to mention this jacket around some of my family- especially my uncle who fought in this war and still won't talk about it.

Not even telling hubby who did serve proudly in Vietnam.. We both drop serious coin in LLL. He would never shop there again if he knew LLL was playing political name that article of clothing game! Sorry Lulu, very wrong move.

The pricing on that Miracle Jacket is crazy! I bet it's going to 're-priced' after a week of not selling. The jacket does look really nice and cozy, but I would never pay that much!

Are there any reflective strips on this new jacket? I can't see any in these pictures. - Jenn

@ 4:14AM - the term "draft dodger" was a derogatory term during the Vietnam War era. It was synonymous with cowardice and shirking one's duty (these are not my personal beliefs). In fact, those who fled to Canada chose to call themselves "conscientious objectors" instead. Thus, LLL while trying to be funny named the jacket after a term of derision.

The fact that we're having a political discussion about a jacket is proof positive that the name is not witty but in poor taste and offensive to some. To some Americans, namely those who were against the draft, the jacket is the equivalent of naming it "Suffragettes suck" or the like.

If you are offended by the name then write the company and/or post on their Facebook site. I haven't seen any posts there about it yet. I still think it's largely a cultural difference. It's not the first time lululemon has come out with a cringe-worthy misstep and it won't be the last.

What the fluff are you talking about????

Very well said... People who say this "draft dodger jacket" name doesn't offend anyone must not know it is like calling it the "coward run away from duty jacket"... NOT cool LLL!
I'm surprised ppl haven't posted on Facebook yet!

The name is terrible. I'd never buy it no matter how cute...wouldn't even wear it if it was given to me. Terrible choice LLL.

Miracle Jacket...as in: it's a "miracle" anyone bought it at the full price. Total pass for me, even if it made it to wmtm.

I'll take a great Cuddle Up any day over that Miracle jacket.

Why has the gibberish as displayed in Anonymous 9:18 AM been approved?

love your answer LLA. very good way to handle the discussion. I hope that lulu has an answer.I actually really think that they were talking about the wind.

I'm Canadian. Draft dodgers isn't such a horrible term here. I kinda thinks it takes a lot if courage and strong will to stand up for what you believe in, and leave your life behind knowing you might never see anyone again.... So I wouldn't say it is a derogatory term at all... Also - It's a pun people. A pun.

Anonymous said...

I really don't think LLL meant any harm by the name. The (Canadian) staff that creates these names is full of young people who are not familiar with the detailed history of the Vietnam War, it was an American war after all, and before many of their times. It's simply alliteration for a winter jacket that will help block wind chill!
