More Stripes Craziness in Our Future

The ladies had some fun with the Mint Moment Forme Jacket but check out this latest Forme on the right. It's a Polar Haze Sea Stripe shown with the matching Wunder Unders. The girl also has on the matching CRB underneath which we can't see. This one might actually be kind of fun when paired with solid bottoms but it's pure crazytown with the matching Wunder Unders. It seems like the designers were drawing inspiration from the circus or maybe prisons. However, it seems that is what is on tap for Spring 2013. Maybe lululemon shouldn't follow the trends so closely. The occasional striped piece is great to update my collection but not everything needs to be striped.

Stripes are IN for Spring 2013

So, this brings up an interesting question - how closely do you, Jane Lululemon Consumer, want your technical wear to follow street clothing trends? It seems as though the color blocking went over very poorly. I'm not sure how well it's doing as far as street wear is concerned either. I know I'm seeing more of it on TV lately but I'll have to pay more attention when I'm out and about. Stripes will probably fair better since it's a very classic look but I think there are only so many striped items I am willing to add to my current lululemon collection. I'm not sure I'd be willing to do head-to-toe thick stripes though I did love Deep Navy Amica Stripe when it was out a few years ago and have seen women rock the look:

Ha ha, I think it looks like PJs! Lol and I deffinately think that vertical stripes (above WUCs, beaming blue jacket sleeves we saw) remind me of the circus!

Did anyone see the note on the wunder unders on lulus site? Lulu noted that they are sheer due to the nature of the fabric and suggest doing downward dog to make sure you are happy with the coverage!!!! What kind of crap is that!!!!

At least they're having fun with it. Even if we're not going to buy it. :)

I'll maybe pick up 1-2 more striped basics, not one of them being a mint moment forme. :)

Ugh.. Wider stripes can work but these thin stripes are not flattering.

Anonymous said...

so we leave behind horizontal stripes for vertical stripes? hmmm - i agree very circus-y! I was just at the ringling brothers museum - these outfits fit right in!

Anonymous said...

The outfit on the left looks really cute for coaching. But I wouldn't wear it otherwise.

OMG I would burst into tears if someone made me wear, uh, any of these outfits.

OT, I bought my very first Scuba ever this past weekend. It was one of the handful of regular Scubas in my size leftover among the hordes of Scuba Stretches. However, I recall that Scuba Stretches were listed as Scubas for a time and am therefore paranoid that I dropped $108 on a Scuba Stretch. The one I bought is black.
Can anyone please help me figure out beyond any shadow of a doubt that I have the good kind and not the crappy kind? I refuse to take the tags (which label it "Scuba Hoodie") off until I am certain!

I'm basically sick of stripes...it seems like that is all lululemon is doing lately...stripes and florals? boring, overdone, not unique.
I like that they add some flair to follow fashion trends, but only to an extent. Lately it just hasn't worked. I don't know if it's a problem with their designers and poor execution but I do remember other things in the past were done so well. For example--very subtle ruffles, gathering, ruching, mesh details... Anyways, I am starting to get on board with those that think of lululemon as just plain overpriced. It kind of makes me sick now. I used to get so excited about it and felt like i could get staple pieces that would be classy and last forever, that I would not tire of (and I still have some of those pieces from back when)...but now I just feel like it's too trendy and cheap feeling. I can get nicer basics from other companies for a better price now.

Didnt Larry, Curley and Moe from the original three stooges, have a prison outfit that looked like that?! OMG!! We've gone from one extreme to another--crotchless pants to jailbird outfits! Big OMG!!! Seriously, Im betting we'll never see the almighty Christine Day, in any if these foolish outfits! What's next? A lulu straight jacket, with matching Hannibal Lecter face mask? PLEASE, Where's my free Lulu shopper, that came with my last order...so I can put the bag over my head!

@ anon 10:49 am - If your Sucba had ribbed panels down the sides it's the good kind. Additionally, the hood will be lined.

Anon 10:49

Easiest way to tell (IMO) if your new Scuba is not a Scuba Stretch is to look at the hood. The Scuba hood is lined and looks quite nice. The Scuba Stretch hood is unlined and looks like fuzzy fleece.

From what I've seen, black is one of the few colors left in the Scuba so you are probably okay :)

Anonymous said...

Yep, double sided hood is the quickest way to tell.

I have always been a sucker for stripes. LOVED the SeaWheeze striped CRB, am longing for the subtle stripes of the pink shell/black NLT in Oz, and one of my all-time favorite CRBs is the Surge wee stripe. But this is too much of a good thing. Honestly, if I wanted to be a fashion plate and follow the runway trends, I would be shopping at Saks, not lulu! I agree with @anon 10:49 that it was the SUBTLE details that made lulu cute and feminine, but still kept function at the forefront. Bottom-line: I'm an athlete, and I want to look like one! (Just one with good taste...:)

I just posted this review on the Uba lux jacket. LLL may never publish it, but I have lots of fit details and thought it might be helpful to those considering it.

I thought this was a potentially a good value for a hopefully somewhat warm, lightweight jacket. Nope.

I have maybe a dozen Scubas and many other long-sleeved Lulu tops. I am a true size 8, around 145 lbs, 5'6" and a 34DD. All of my original Scubas are a size 8. I purchased 1 Scuba stretch and it is a 10 simply because it was too short.

I had heard that the Uba was a bit on the shorter side, so I went with the same idea on fit that I did with the Scuba stretch. I am not sure what happened with the designers, but the dimensions are way off on the Uba! I tried the size 10 on today and the arms were so long that I had to bunch the sleeves up just to put my thumb in the thumbhole. Also, the jacket was was too big around the mid section and yet, was noticably too short. The back of it looked too big too. Note that this cire puffy jacket catches the light in such a way, that poofiness in the jacket where poofiness on your body doesn't exist is very unflattering. My boyfriend immediately commented that he thought it looked like pleather.

As far as warmth goes, the luxchange panel is warm ONLY where the luxchange panel exists. The rest of the jacket is freezing cold as it is unlined and the cire puffy fabric feels very cool against the skin. Also, the jacket was so big that the luxchange panel stuck way out from my body.

Sizing back down to a size 8 likely would help with the boxiness of the midsection. However, it isn't going to help the abnormally long ape-like sleeves, unless you are actually an ape. Furthermore, if you happen to have very long arms, likely you need a longer jacket because your torse is also long! So, a short jacket is not going to cut it for you.

To recap: Jacket is true to size around the mid-section so don't order up. The arms are quite long, with the thumbholes hitting at my fingertips. The jacket is not at all warm except for a tiny section in the front where the luxchange panel exists. The jacket is very short, similar to the Scuba stretch. And finally, boyfriends believe it to be pleather.

I was already calling my macro stripe wuc's my jailbirds! LOLOL- these are the real deal!
Just add a bright prison orange jacket and I will have completed my Lockdown Chic ensemble!

I don't want my workout wear to mirror my streetwear this closely (as if streetwear isn't already my workout wear!! -- lol I mean sometimes I have jeans . .. )

Anyway - I got my beaming blue scuba today -- same size I always get 10. Its my first scuba stretch and WOW. I'm like Puffy McPufferton trying to squeeze my bust into this =(

It really is smaller than the original scuba. The tags are still on and I think its a nice hoodie for a warmer weather climate. It doesn't hold a candle to the original scuba and I'm pretty bummed but I will probably gift this to my friend - only because I can't fit into it WAH lol and I don't like having to deal with returns etc driving far to "local" lulu etc. - she will love it.
- Glad I have a black original and currant original =(

Wish this one fit me -cause I do really like the beaming blue color.

Absolutely adore my black swiftly tank. going to stock up on these before lulu decides to go wreak havoc on another thing I like.

While the skirt and jackeded suit at the far right of the strip of trending fashion is nice, the lulu black/white stripeapalooza WU/CRB/Forme combo is horrid. One piece on its own is an accent, but the head to toe all stripe look is insane.

I'm sure they didn't mean it this way, but to be honest, it reminds me of the striped pyjamas concentration camp victims were forced to wear. Personally, I'd feel offensive wearing it.

OT - I think a girl in my class was wearing a pair of mint moment speed shorts. Pretty!!!

I like to stick with simple clean designs for working out. I don't like to make fashion statements with my workout wear as I think that looks really cheesy so I'm more prone to gravitating to classics in bright solid colors. I like to look cute and put together for the gym, but not like it's my entire daytime highlight to dress up for a workout. Occasionally I'll venture out and make a bold choice like a stripe or a pattern/print but that would be ONE item in that trend and only if it looks good on me and is flattering. Having a whole entire run line in color blocking meant that I got a total of zero items. Big contrasting stripes means I'll probably not do spring 2013 running gear either. I think lulu needs to stop putting all their eggs into one fashion trend basket.

Are you happy with the fit/style of the hoody? I find if interesting you're going off what everyone else thinks of it rather than your own opinion and experience?

@LLA--- I tried the RFYL crops after your rave reviews -- and I wanted to say thank you -- because they are awesome --I love them-- they are actually worth the $ -- which is rare lately -- didn't hesitate to rip the tags off! Thanks for your great and honest reviews!!

On a side note -- i grabbed the Pedal Power jacket in black when it was is WMTM -- it is similar in fabric to the new Scuba SE -- and I have to say i love it and get so many compliments on it -- If the SE one goes to loot I might grab that too -- i get the hefty bag comparison but in person it is a nice fabric and doesnt look hefty baggish -- i think it looks kind of leather-y

LuluAddict said...

I'm sure the eds were having fun putting all the stripes together but I wouldn't put it past someone to make that outfit. I once saw a woman in head to toe ikat print - a tee and crops - in a lulu store.

Sum it up in a word "Inmates". What is going on Lulu?!?!? You have gone off the deep end with the stripes already. I sure these girls are doing it for a joke. BEWARE if worn outside you will be the next contestant on What Not to Wear!! Hello Clinton and Stacy:)

Anonymous said...

yeah...these stripes are a no....between burberry brit + tory burch + loft + anntaylor my street/work/day wear is covered. most days i wear blouses and slim pants, but if i need to do plant/field work i wear a lulu jacket (old scuba was perfect) and j brands. i feel like they think a "higher-end" fashion shopper is going to go for this crap. too bad it's ugly and we have access to better styles with better customer service. i'd rather pay $800 for a burberry brit jacket nordstrom will repair/replace/take back than $300 for a wtf jacket in tacky or boring colors with no guarantees.

I think the mint moment forme jacket looks good on that girl ! better than on the model

I do like that lulu brings fashion into the fitness world. I wasn't really a fan of the color blocking, but I do like the lace, stripes in moderation and the color trends (like neon). That's what makes them lululemon and not every other athletic brand. If I wanted plain athletic wear, I would buy Nike, UnderArmour, etc. I love the ruffles, ruching, pleating, etc. and I wish they would do more of that. Lately, things are a little blah for my taste. More new tank styles would be nice, instead of so many new running jackets being introduced. I hope they can get back to the quality they had in the past because the prices are too high for a product that doesn't perform well.

I know people have discussed poor sales and items being on the website longer, but I am pretty sure that is do to much higher inventory levels. They are probably doing away with the scarcity model a bit, in favor of selling more product. The reason I think this, is because when I started wearing lulu two years ago, I only knew one other person wearing it. It is so popular now where I live and I keep spotting more and more of it all the time. They may be losing old customers, but finding new?? That will only work for so long, I think.

It is beyond doubt an original scuba. They haven't made the stretch in black yet! KEEP IT you won't regret it!

I do not take my street clothes to the gym, nor do I take my workout clothes to the streets. To each its own, but that's just me. Lululemon is confine to workout time and occasionally on trips/vacations.
As for the stripes, I like them on bottoms only when are placed horizontally AND are very thin/fine lines.

I ordered the scoop necks in beaming blue and love red last week. I'm happy to report the fit and feel of the solid colors is the same as before. The BB color is so pretty. Glad to have them back!

I just feel like the whole brand is synonymous with trying too hard to be cute. Kind of embarrassed to wear visible LLL now whether in a gym or outdoors.

LuluAddict said...

I like them keeping up with the color trends a lot. I also don't mind a little of the current things, like stripes or lace, but not in every piece.

@ 11:54 AM you are correct re: the striped outfit if reminiscent of concentration camp garb.

As for fashion...LLL is not haute couture. To take fashion trends, colours etc. and use a bit of it in LLL wear, fine. But they overdo it! What I imagine they are banking on right now is the trend conscious consumer who goes for this type of thing, then must get the newest/latest because they want to be on trend/current. That may mean more $ for LLL. The crazy thing is is that there are many loyal customers (as this blog proves) that stay with LLL and continue to buy, for things that they do great. These customers spend a lot of money on LLL year in, year out, but do not seem to matter at all right now. I think this company has gone too far from its roots and doesn't know what it is anymore. I don't feel they have a cohesive or strong vision right now.

Lulu has, however, always taken cue from "high" fashion trends — but typically, it waits for something to become coveted as a non-workout item before it makes its own version. Take the skinny cargo pant — it was almost a full year of J Brand madness over the skinny cargo before Lulu came out with its own version. This is a much smarter manoveur — Lulu's loyal clientele, from what I've observed on website reviews, this site, and reviews on the ecommerce site, is actually very conservative when it comes to trends. It likes to see a trend be "proven" before it commits. The craziness forced on from above — like harem pants! (I don't mind them, but Lulu shoppers have consistently shown that they can't stand them; anything harem ends up in WMTM) or these ridiculous stripes just don't work.
It's something that I continue to find perplexing. Not just because this year has seen the demise of *so* many popular styles — the Define, the Scuba, &c. And the abandoning of seasonal favs — Audrey jacket, Apr├Ęs ski jacket, & there weren't even Cuddle up pants this year! But it seems fundamentally to misunderstand the customer base. Lulu's customer base has shown that it REALLY likes these stand-by favs which are interspersed by the odd bit of already-proven trendiness. Wholesale adoption of runway trends is, in my opinion, going to prove as popular as the rest of this year of experimentation/alienation. My two cents. :)

Check out the new bag/color pattern in the Bags banner on the Aussie side! Hope to see it in a solid color on the US side.

LuluAddict said...

@ansarca - Great oberservations!! I think the upcoming poor 4th quarter results will really hammer home what the lulu base thinks of the product mix/color schemes. They got it so wrong for this holiday season - too much outerwear in very limited styles - Bundle Up Jackets, U-Turn Pullovers, and Runder Under LS ad naseum while very little in the way cute new studio/gym tank styles except for endless variations on the Back on Track Tank (and I never got the impression that that tank was a huge hit in the first place so it's puzzling they chose this one to make 50 versions of).

That being said, I've been to two stores in my area in two days which were fairly busy so the DHBH, the return of the Scoop Neck, and the very classic pink and B&W patterned color scheme might help a little bit for them. However, early comments on the striped items we've seen coming out of Australia are not encouraging.
