Swiftly Tanks Getting Shorter? Why?!? (Updated)

Ugh, I really hate to say this but it looks like the newest Swiftly tanks are being made a few inches shorter than previous versions. On the left is Burning Yellow and the right is a new Frond tank. Both photos use the same model. I think lots of runners already have an issue with this top riding up so I cannot fathom why this top was made shorter. What a mistake. This is a lot of runner's favorite summer top but I know I've read several comments that people will not be buying this new short version. Please change it back!

Update: So, lululemon responded to a question on their Facebook page about a change in the length of their Swiftly tanks:

I took a look at the colour you mentioned above, and I believe what you are noticing is actually related to the method used to produce all of our seamless Swiftly garments, not just the Swiftly Racerback. To create these items and have them be seamless, we produce them on a tubular knitting machine. Because of this method, it can result in certain groups of these styles having a different length - on the longer or shorter side by comparison. I haven't heard any feedback from our designers saying they are thinking of changing the length, though I will still definitely pass on everyone's comments about how they love the longer length of this style.
- I hope it's true that Swiftly SL lengths have not been deliberately changed but bummed that the green is shorter because of a manufacturing tolerance issue. I hate to size up in it because then the neckline and armholes don't fit right. I guess I'll have to wait until the tank gets here and am able to try it on.

Latest update by Lululemon on their Facebook page - they are shorter - BOO!!!!!!!

Hey everyone,
I wanted to do some further digging into these colours as they aren't something we have seen in North America yet. What I found out is that for spring our designers are trying out a redesigned shorter version of the top for this season. Like I mentioned above, I appreciate that you all love this style in a longer length and will be sharing this with our designers.

A reader commented she checked her new Bleached Coral Swiftly against her Pink Shell and the length difference in a  size 4 was 1.5".

I would think the shorter length might help with the riding up issue. My Swiftlys ride up because they are tighter around the hips. But if these fit higher, then my guess is that issue will be eliminated. I'm 5'2" so I'm happy about the shorter length. ;)

Anonymous said...

It rides up because there is too much fabric. who needs all that length...really? I'm not a fan of short tops, but personally I find the tanks too long, but the race CRB that came out last year was too short. Too bad the Swiftly's can not be altered to every individual taste because the hemline is not sewn.

I posted this observation on this blog the other day regarding these two colors on the same model, and i'm really glad others agree and that i'm not crazy to notice the length difference. I am DYING for a frond swiftly, but don't want it at that length, the old ones were perfect. I hope the SS swiftly in frond is normal at least so i can get this color in one top at least :( I definitely agree - LLL please listen and CHANGE the length BACK to normal.

Canadian eh said...

OMG all the tops are shorter. Sucks.

Laurie said...

I'm thrilled about the new length. I'm 5'3, 110 lbs, and super muscular from CrossFit. The CRB and Swiftly tanks are much too long on me, so I'm excited to not have to purchase stuff and then pay to have it hemmed.

Anonymous said...

I ordered a black and a polar haze swiftly tank at the same time. There is a couple of inches difference in the length. I'm short waisted so it doesn't really bother me.

AllisonFay said...

Last summer I was just getting into Lululemon so I didn't buy any swiftly tanks. Now, I am obsessed with my Swiftly SS and LS so I was planning on buying several Swiftly tanks for summer running. If they are short, I don't be buying a single one!

I don't think the models are the same. The one is the gal with the dark hair on the usual site pics. the girl on the left is more ethnic, one of the newer models. Just a guess.

RunItMyWay said...

Nooooo!!!!! Why Lulu, why?! If it's another cost-cutting thing, is that extra few cents of material you're saving really worth it??

Sad, but I won't be buying any until the length is back to normal. I also haven't bought a Scuba (and I have 7 of the old ones) since they cut the length down. Why ruin such a good thing??

Anonymous said...

I know I'm in the minority here but I'm looking forward to the change. I wear a size 8 (I'm 5'8) & the tanks are so long on me unless I kind of bag them up around my waist. Add the sweat of a long run & I'm wearing a soggy dress!! I do NOT want to show my stomach at all but am hoping the shorter version will be better for speeds & running skirts.

Anonymous said...

They were already short enough, IMO. Not a positive change here.

Anonymous said...

It is the same model, see her tattoo on her wrist.

Anonymous said...

I don't think the models are the same either... So it's hard to call from these pictures if they are being made shorter or not...

LuluAddict said...

@ anon 7:40 pm- Go to the Australian side of the website and look at the model for the Burning Yellow and the Frond swiftly tanks. The hair is different but they are the same girl. They both have a freckle right over their adam's apple area.

Anonymous said...

I am not excited about this shorter length. I really wanted this frond swiftly but not at the shorter length.

As a petite runner I don't mind a bit of riding up when running in return for the extra bum coverage when I am out and about or at a barre class. If this tank doesn't serve a dual purpose then I'm not going to buy. Looks like I'll have to start buying a few more of the Gap "swiftlys"... They do come in some pretty great colors.

Do we know if this change will carry over to the long sleeve swiftlys as well?

Anonymous said...

Maybe customer base is shifting towards more petite women? Lululemon claims to do heavy customer research.

Jen said...

I'm not sure this is a bad thing, for me anyway. I've had to pull my swiftly down on occasion, and this may remedy that. It's not as short as the racing length CRB (yay). Be interested to see how this goes over ...

Anonymous said...

Same model...same tattoo on left wrist.

Jennifer said...

I'm a cyclist not a runner and I agree with LuluAddict. Shorter would suck because I need longer length to cover my back when I'm riding. It makes the perfect baselayer for rides that transitions well. Say it ain't so :(

Anonymous said...

@ anon - not to mention that the model has the same tattoo in both pictures. the tank is definitely shorter.

Anonymous said...

They are the same, you can see them both on the Australia LLL website AND they both have the "Hope" tattoo on the side of wrist.

Anonymous said...

And the "Hope" tattoo on side of wrist ;)

Anonymous said...

I personally found the swiftly tanks to run bigger than the LS swiftlys... I could wear a 2/4 in swiftly tanks but I felt more comfortable in the LS swiftly size 6 cause it was less tight around my belly. The length of both never bothered me and I'm 5'3" so I'm not the norm or average height of 5'5"... I feel bad for anyone average or taller. I know I hate the new scuba stretch length too.

Anonymous said...

Well, I'm ok with this change cuz it doesn't affect me! Haha
I'm a crb kinda gal..so hope these shorter lengths don't carry over to those!

Anonymous said...

I really think its a cost cutting measure that's not getting passed onto the consumer. If it was heavy research on the part of lulu they'd make varying lengths like they do pants and skirts.

NicoleC said...

I'm in Australia and just received some new items from this weeks upload... and I'm pretty disappointed!

First up the new speed shorts (yellow check) are stiff shiny fabric that you can clearly see the liner through. Also the print doesn't line up which is super irritating! lol. But the thing I dislike the most is the new cut... they are approx an inch longer at the back than my other speeds and just don't fit as nicely. I noticed this with the new flare speeds as well. Not a flattering change IMO :(

Then the new check green (frond?) CRB... its gorgeous but the fabric is extremely stiff and heavy. Not like any other CRB I own (and I have around 40+)... but its most similar to the thick ziggy fabric from last season? Def not summer weight... and it fits quite tight because of this.

They also seem to have chopped around an inch off the bottom of the CRB's? The Beaming Blue one also seemed tiny compared to my similar porcelain?

The only thing I really liked from my order was the long sleeved pink swiftly... such a gorgeous bright color! But all in all a real let down :(

Anonymous said...

Is the polar haze the shorter of them? I was hoping to buy one but I need the extra length.

Anonymous said...

Swiftlys always ride up on me, but it's probably because of my proportions ( waist 27, hips 38, 5'5", 120). Even regular cotton tanks ride up if they are extra long, so I'm guessing it's a body shape issue. Some people will like the change, some won't. Seems like LLL fans are resistant to change and highly suspicious of the company's motives. That says a lot about the company these days.

Anonymous said...

I have purchased Swiftly tanks in the past and returned them..they were like tunic on me, covered by entire butt and the length was annoying when running. I will give them another try, I think the shorter length will work for me. I'm 5 foot 6 inches tall

Liz8 said...

It looks like the new tanks will be similar in length to the power purple SE tank. It is much shorter than the original, but I don't mind it. In most situations, I prefer that length, and I'm 5'7". As long as the new ones are not shorter than that, I'm happy!

Anonymous said...

I don't believe Lulu does "heavy" customer research! They are catering to small, petite ladies and yet online the larger sizes always seem to sell the fastest!!! What does that tell me? That the majority of ladies are into the bigger sizes. I don't know what the hell Lulu is doing these days, but it's all backwards and oh so very annoying! LOL... Im a size 6 or 8 in Lulu tops, to cover big boobs, so I guess I will be going up a size or 2 to get, the longer length! Im 5'6...118 lbs, no muscle, just skinny and fit. I sent an email to Gap yesterday (Gap Canada) and asked them to bring Athleta to their online store in Canada. they emailed me back and said they will consider it, but need to receive more emails from fellow Canadians. custserv@gapcanada.ca :)

Anonymous said...

I wish they'd make a tunic out of the swiftly material. I like tops that are a little loose at the bottom for when I run. If I wear anything that is fitted, it rides up. I wonder if the shorter length will fix that? I bet not. My fave run shirt is the tie & fly from last year. It's loose and comfy and it stays down.
Also, do you think LLL is going to give us a discount for cutting off 3" of fabric? Haha.

Last, has anyone tried the new style of Inspires? The Inspire II? I'd love a fit report on the waistband. Did they fix it? Is the fabric really Power Luxtreme and not regular Luxtreme?
Thanks. :)

nancy said...

It may be the same model but the photo on the left shows her butt got bigger. The tank looks unchanged.

wesa121 said...

Being 5'0" Im not upset! My swiftly tanks get so wet in the summer from my sweating (Georgia HEAT) they end up half way down my thigh!

Anonymous said...

Wow the new sneakiness by LLL to post the Studio Pant with Liner in Alberta Lake again (Canada wmtm), but of course the colour is not available. When you view it, doesn't show as all sizes sold out, just shows you all you can pick are polar cream. DON'T make me look at this item in a colour I think is back/replenished (who knows) as sometimes happens on wmtm. I don't want polar cream!

And really, they dropped clown jacket to $59...I wouldn't even buy it for $1, it's that ugly!

Anonymous said...

8:46 PM ah yeah right "claims"...those claims are full of BS. You don't change a shirt just to go after petites. LLL should be creating average, tall and petite versions of their clothes. We all know that sizing/design, seams, pattern lay, do not work perfectly for all sizes.

LLL seems to think cropped is in. It's idiotic.

Anonymous said...

am I the only one who isn't in love with the LS swiftlys? I have given up on them and I'm bummed I spent any money on them. They ride up like crazy. They need silicone dots on the bottom like the skidless towels. I won't even venture into Swiftly racerbacks because of that issue. The fabric is luscious but the last thing i want to do is be tugging every ten seconds on a twenty mile run.
NO THANK YOU.

Anonymous said...

I'm actually happy with the shorter length. I feel like the shorter length would make it comparable to what the old Scoop Neck tank length used to be. I find that most LLL tanks are 2-3 inches too long and I don't even have a short torso.

Anonymous said...

I find the Gap swiftly quite decent. The material is not as thin or fragile as Lulu swiftlys. And the price is pretty good too. I always look for the Gap versions first if I am lokking for a specific color.

Anonymous said...

HOORAY! I love swiftly SL and wanted to love the swiftly tanks but they are too big, the sizes are completely different between the two. I've been hoping they'd make a size 2 and shorten it. These tanks look horrible with running skirts as they are now - this is good news to those of us only 5'4"! :)

Anonymous said...

I wear these swiftly tanks religiously for kickboxing and I can say with certainty that the shorter length will be a no go for me, I can't exactly stop in the middle of a sparring session with gloves on to pull down my too-short top. The old ones were perfect :(

LuluAddict said...

I don't think they cater to petites at all. Their min pant inseam is something like 34". When I first started buying regular length pants were about a 30-31" inseam and I never had to have them hemmed. Now I need every new purchase hemmed by several inches and I am an average 5'5" height. I think this is just a cost cutting measure.

Anonymous said...

I do think that the shorter length might work better for my running skirt ensembles. Like some others have said, the racing length CRBs were too short, but my swiftly tanks tend to bunch up at the bottom. So maybe this change will fit me well. It could also be a body type issue as I am a small waist, ample hips kind of girl.
As for the riding up issue, I have this problem with swiftlys when combined with certain pants or crops. I can't pinpoint the problem because its not all luxtreme that causes ride up. Once I work up a sweat the ride up tends to stop.

Anonymous said...

OT but I LOVE Gap "Swiftlys"!! Maybe not as soft and less color selection than Lulu's, but I tend to wear my workout clothes a few times then chuck them anyway...so I feel less bad with the more affordable Gaps. Also, the smallest Gap Swiftlys run bigger than Lulu's FYI.

Anonymous said...

maybe petite was the wrong word, I meant super tiny, skinny women, not short. LOL

Anonymous said...

I just got the burning yellow swiftly tank, will compare with the aquamarine one that I bought last year. My guess is that lulu is asking for larger quantities of their designs and the manufacturers are contracting to other manufacturer that may not have such great quality control that is why we get some batches that are good and some are not. This tends to happen when you go into serious mass production.
I prefer the shorter length because I am short, but I can understand that it sucks to have an item that you are familiar with and have used for a while change.

Anonymous said...

Anon @ 10:57 - no the black one was shorter than the polar haze. The polar haze is the same as my porcelain and dazzling tanks.

Anonymous said...

OT - after being disappointed with Lulu lately, I placed an order for some Sweaty Betty tanks. Man, is this stuff ever cute! Material is not as soft as luon, and is more like Nike drifit. I got the flex overvest and double time tank, as I like to wear my own bra and like a little more coverage. I find it fits a bit big. I ordered medium, and I actually thought it might be small given the size guide, but I could have easily sized down to a small. I wear an 8 in lulu, 5"8', 145lbs, 32E.

Anonymous said...

I'm 5'8" and the old swiftly tanks were always too long on me. They came down so far on my hips that they rode up to my navel. I think they would actually stay in place if the bottom hem rested higher up on my waist. Cost cutting measure or not, I like it.

sophia said...

i'm actually excited about the shorter length. i tend to only wear the swiftly tanks solo in the summer (not as a baselayer in other seasons), which means i'm wearing them with shorts or a skirt. the longer mid-bum length looks silly with shorts/skirts, i always need to bunch it up around my hips anyway. and the last thing i need in the middle of the summer is extra fabric. i was excited about the racing length CRB last year for just this reason, but it was TOO short. this shortened swiftly sounds like it's hitting the perfect in-between short/skirt length. yay! sure, i like the CRBS longer for wearing crops, but i'll take my swiftlies shorter happily (: (though on that note, it seems like the CRBs had gotten longer recently...which i didn't like. so if the CRBs seem shorter too, it might just be a "correction". my currant (winter 2011 version), tender violet, and heathered persian purple swiftlies fit noticiably shorter and tighter than other recent colors like raspberry glow, menthol, and polar cream. i like the shorter, tighter ones.)

Anonymous said...

I bought the new ones & returned them (inkwell/ burning yellow). The waistband is still ~0.5-1" shorter than my old inspires. On me that's where the muffin top shows, and I don't usually have muffin top. So, the waistband is still cutting into my waist while the rest of the fits perfectly. Sizing up made the pants too big. It's not the rise, it's the waistband height IMO.

Anonymous said...

Her butt didn't get bigger. It's the angle she is standing relative to the camera lens. In the second photo she is standing such that more of her back can be seen, hence more of her backside (I mean photo on the right).

Marlies said...

They definitely don't cater to petites. I'm 5'2" and I have to get every pair of pants hemmed. I returned the Ebb&Flow crops because they came down to below my feet. :-) I have to get the new Power Y's and Scoop Necks hemmed too. That all said, I still love my LLL and at least they don't charge for the hemming!

Anonymous said...

Why don't we wait until the frond swiftly tank comes to NA and try it on before we pass judgement.

Anonymous said...

Nancy,

LOL that the models butt got bigger! It looks bigger because the top is shorter....the additional coverage makes the butt look a bit smaller (which is why I love longer tanks, personally).

Anonymous said...

I measured my bleached coral swiftly compared to my menthol and pink shell ones. It is slightly less than 1.5 inches shorter in size 4. Trying it on in the shop, and having read that it was shorter, I could not see the difference. Both the old and new are plenty long enough on me. I am 5'4". The bleached coral is only slighly paler and oranger than pink shell in the swiftly. I also tried on the yellow gingham speed shorts and the bleached coral groovy run shorts. I liked the look of them on the rack but didn't like them on. I think it was more being yellow rather than the gingham I didn't like for the speeds. I like yellow but not in these shorts. I didn't like the look of the gingham on the longer legs of the groovy run shorts. I ended up buying the solid bleached coral speed shorts.

LuluAddict said...

@ anon 11:24 am - Thanks for measuring your tanks for us!

Anonymous said...

I see u asked the question on Lulus wall as to if the new swiflys were going to be shorter.... I love the BS, automated answers, Lulu always seems to give us! In fact, Im SURE, we all know MORE about Lulu, than Lulus own "almighty" GEC! Yea, it truly IS that bad! :(

Anonymous said...

Which style are the Gap "swiftlys"?

Anonymous said...

I hope that the swiftly tanks are shorter. I bought some last summer but returned them b/c they're too long to wear with shorts/skirts (as others have said). Also, the model wearing them in the photo is probably the tallest of all of their models, so of course it's going to look short on her. She's probably 8 inches taller than me! I'm 5'2''.

Anonymous said...

@ 5:24 AM, ha I also emailed Gap a couple weeks ago and asked them why there was no on line Canadian Store (or retail stores). Even though I was only curious, received a quick, polite and informative response. Yes, they want to hear from Canadians. I did express that I'm unhappy with LLL and the direction they are heading in (quality issues etc. as well), and that there's opportunity for Athleta. Plus, we have the rest of it Gap, BR, ON, so why can't we have at least the on line store.

Anonymous said...

Yeh, i've bought a couple of the gap swiftly's (can't remember the exact name, for who wants to know) but its pretty easy to go on their site and spot them. I got them at a steeep discount one in a flare like color called neon coral and neon blue which is a really pretty cobalt blue scored them for 13 a piece before christmas a sale they had. anyhow love them they make short sleeve and long sleeve too very reasonably priced. all the tops too short pant very long? 0-well it helps me not spend my money there which was getting a bit out of hand so i'm fine w/ it- still love thier bottoms better than any other retailer so pretty easy to find tops elsewhere and pants w/ lulu.

Here was another update from LLL facebook..

I wanted to do some further digging into these colours as they aren't something we have seen in North America yet. What I found out is that for spring our designers are trying out a redesigned shorter version of the top for this season. Like I mentioned above, I appreciate that you all love this style in a longer length and will be sharing this with our designers.

Sounds like they are indeed shorter.

5:24 am. I sent GAP another email today, regarding Athleta and someone else responded to me with this looooong, drawn out email stating as a Canadian I COULD order Athleta from the USA and have it shipped to Canada and that they figure out all the shipping and duty fees, ect when I pay. I don't want to go there, bec, she also said, no returns. I also DON'T want to get stuck with huge, crazy duty fees!! So, no thank you...I said to myself--I'll just HOPE they come online at some point, for us Canadians! Like you said, their other brands are in Canada now, so why not Athleta?!? I too told them, I was terribly unhappy with the poor quality and poor customer service of Lulu.... :(

Anonymous said...

LLA- Lululemon commented again on that post on Facebook, now saying that the designers are trying a shorter, redesigned swiftly for spring. She did some "further digging" to find this out. Hmm

Anonymous said...

CRB's are not longer in the recent past, imo. I used to have to get my CRB's hemmed consistently (size 2) to remove at least 2". Have not had to do that with any of the ones from the past year (bought all the blues and Black Swan). They were fine on and when I got them home I'd compare them to the length of the ones I'd previously had hemmed, new length matched or was not so long that hemming was warranted.

Anonymous said...

@ Anon 12:08-- The Gap "swiftly" is called the GapFit Motion racerback tank

LuluAddict said...

@ anon 4:37 pm - thanks. I didn't check back on that post. Boo on the shorter length.

Marlies said...

Alberta lake is fully stocked on US site.

Anonymous said...

Fine. Try something new. But at least have the courtesy to change the item description. LLL does that all too often...change things and leave it to someone to get their order and complain before they acknowledge. You'd think by this point they would have figured out that they should be preemptive about it. Ha.

sophia said...

yay! i know you're not happy with the shorter length, LLA, but it doesn't sound like "most" people are upset about the change. it sounds like about half of everyone is excited and happy for the shorter length. i'm sorry to those who loved the longer length, but i didn't, and so i'm happy about the shorter length (since you can't have swiftlies hemmed)

Anonymous said...

A 1.5 inch difference is not drastic. But being 5"4 it might help the riding up issue I also have with my swiftlies. And I don't have big hips. I will have to check them out. Will be more tempted if they are shorter.

Anonymous said...

The thing is - it's been a slight difference. Burning yellow (this run); is shorter than last years' run; and then frond (next run) is shorter. No design change; they're just trying to slowly cut costs by slowly shortening the material, not thinking we would notice.

LuluAddict said...

@ sohpia - I will wait to see how it looks on but shorter tops make a lot of women look even hippier than they are - they just cut you in half. Look at photos of old workout gear from the 80s where the pants came up high and the tops were shorter - not the most flattering look. I totally get why shorter women don't mind the change. On my various lulu-oriented facebook groups a lot of people don't care for the change. I think the people who really like Swiftly tanks liked them just as they are. It's also an accumulation of frustration of the unannounced "changes" that have been made to a lot of core items that were extremely well-reviewed that seem more like cost-cutting measures rather than true design improvements - triangle gussets, a shorter/thinner Scuba hoodie, Power Ys made of the thinner luon light, etc.

Anonymous said...

I put my aquamarine on top of the burning yellow one, and they are the same length. the yellow one is a bit wider. It works for me because I am short 5'3" 120 lbs.

Anonymous said...

Hey 4:34 PM, I explained in my email to them with why I wouldn't order from the US site. Obviously we are aware we can go through "international". I was not going to pay $90 for a pair of $45 crops. The additional was all duty and broker fees. I get it, it's not worth it though. That's why I wanted to know why - since we have BR, Gap, NO .ca, which have all the benefits of the US, free shipping over a certain amt etc. etc. - there was no Athleta Canada. They said they appreciated the feedback and liked hearing from Canadian consumers, would pass on the feedback, but could make no promises/give no info as to when/if they would be offering the Canadian site or stores.

I would shop at Athleta in a heartbeat if it was more economical than going through the US site.

Anonymous said...

I have a gap swiftly and it rides up like crazy- but did get for under $20

Jax+Puzzle said...

If anything, I wish they'd make it longer. I always have to purchase Swiftly SS or LS, because the tank is too short. I have one (pop orange) and I never reach for it unless I'm wearing Speed shorts. It looks ridiculously short with crops, but I'm tallish (5'7") and have a very long torso. I just pulled it out to look at it, and it's 2" shorter than my shortest SS Swiftly (Dazzling), and about 3 inches shorter than my longest SS Swiftly (Lilac).

Anonymous said...

So happy with the shorter length! I find that LLL often caters to taller people (incredibly long inseams on pants, and tank lengths of Power Ys and turbo tanks). And while they say that hemming is free, it's incredibly frustrating to have to constantly get inches taken off of everything if I want to wear pants without having them bag at the ankles. And I'm not even short. I'm 5'4, which is average height.

Anonymous said...

What is with Lulu's hate-on against tall people recently? There was not a single hoodie that was longer this season (the pockets on the scuba are at rib height for me and look ridiculous)and only the Daily Yoga jacket that was longer. I used to buy running clothes at lulu because they were longer and unlike all the other brands I didn't have to go to men's styles to get long enough arms or torsos. Now all their stuff is so short and boxy. Totally unflattering if you are tall and not "curvy". Shorter people can hem things. Tall people cannot add length. They have lost this tall customer until they stop making stuff so boxy and short.
